Island Pond Snowmobiling finally becomes a reality on January 20th, 2007

A series of snowstorms, the last one somewhat unexpected, finally opens the snowmobiling season in northeastern Vermont. Saturday, January 20th saw almost blizzard like conditions with 50 mph winds and plenty of blowing and drifting snow. Everyone was very happy!

The storm came following some disappointing ridership figures from the Vermont Association of Snow Travellers (VAST). According to Byrant Watson, director of VAST, sales of trail passes, also called TMAs, are far below the levels of last year. Last year's sales at this timewere around 17,000, he says, but this year there's only been about 5,000.
