Southern Vermont Oct 14th - 16th

Hello All,
I'm planning a trip from PA to the Arlington / Manchester area the weekend of Oct 14th - 16th. I guess color is peaking about now, and am wondering if we'll (my wife and 12 yr old daughter) be too late - just couldn't make it this weekend. Any opinions on color prospects on those dates? And, could anyone suggest any routes in that area. This will be our first trip. I've been reading the posts here & think you provide us newbies with a wealth of information. Just haven't seen much about next weekend. Thanks so much to anyone whom replies!!

There should still be decent color in a week, although much of the area should be past peak.
The lower elevations along the Battenkill and Mettowee Rivers, or on the west slopes of the Taconic Mtns., may be your best bets. Sometimes the west side of Mount Equinox between Route 313 on the south and Route 315 on the north peaks later, and there are some spectacular stands of sugar maples off 315 near West Rupert, VT.

Route 2 in Mass. sometimes peaks a little later too, and it's only 30 minutes south of Arlington. The trip east on the Mohawk Trail (Rt 2) from Williamstown to Greenfield, or on Route 7 south towards Lenox might be worthwhile.

Route 30 from Manchester to Pawlet and up to Route 4 may still be good. It's a little lower.

I talked to a lady from Poultney this morning and she says the colors are still early down there.

You'll definitely be fine. Colors are early all up and down the highway 7 corridor except on the hilltops and along the road. Even Mt. Tabor road was not at peak today.

Thanks for the info dfpvt, pwt 54, & ixl!! We'll try the routes suggested. I was actually considering going into Mass for a bit! Did the rain do much "leaf damage" this weekend? Hopefully things in the lower areas will hold out a little more till this Friday.

There are spots of bare trees where there should have been color. I believe that the high winds and the rain have knocked down some leaves.

The rain didn't do much to the foliage in Bennington County, although the leaves are beginning to drop.

Thanks again to dfpvt, pwt54, ixl, and to bm! One last question & I'll leave you all alone. Would it be advisable to go to the Woodstock area (from Arlington)? I've heard about a farm or two around that make for good early am pictures. Guess I'd have to plan for a 1.5 to 2 hr drive. Do you know if there is still color in that area? (Opps, I gues that's two questions). Thanks & take care all.

Colors were early around Woodstock last Sunday, but should be nice this weekend. One of the farms is the Jenne Farm. It's located on the Jenne Road of route 106 about 3 mile south of South Woodstock. The road will be on the right side of route 106 heading south and half way down a long hill. I'm not sure which is the second farm you are looking for.
