If you had to pick one area to watch a sunrise (the week of Oct 5) where would you go?

Also, the same question for a sunset...

McClusky: bm is taking me up to Mt. Philo on the evening of October 1st to watch the sunset to look over the Champlain Valley and Lake Champlain.

I'm sure she'll be here soon to post some directions/information!

Carol loves sunrises and sunsets and even has a section on her website for them! She'll be sure to help you out!

If you are in the NEK and want foliage and the sunrise/set:
Sunrise -
I would recommend Bobbin Mill Rd in Lunenburg. Excellent views to the East into the White Mtns of New Hampshire.
Alternate site = Somewhere near the intersection of Kirby Mtn Rd and Ranney Hill Rd in Kirby.

Sunset - The top of Burke Mtn (Fire Tower or parking lot). Grand views of northern Vermont. You can litteraly watch the shadows grow on the landscape below. Note: The gate closes 1/2 hour after sunset.
Alternate Site = the crest of Hinton Hill Rd in Westmore. Great West-southwest views of the spine of the Green Mtns

I tried to go to Mt. Philo to watch sunset when I was there in the summer, and they close the access road at sunset, so you have to be out before then.... which was annoying.

Thanks for posting those suggestions. I'll be staying in Concord which is not too far from those spots. If you have any other good photo spots in the Concord area (not just sunrise/sunset) I'd love to know them.

The back way to Plainfield from Barre along Windywood Rd has great views to the west that include Camel's Hump. This is a very nice sunset drive. Look for the intersection with aptley named Sunset Dr for the best spots.

How much of a hike is it from the toll gate? I am fine with hiking but I usually hate wasting that particular hour walking when I could be getting shots from various angles... plus I have to drag gear... but if it isn't too bad I might do it.

Also considering spending a night on top of Mt. Mansfield.

If you are in Barre, you could try the highlands around Graniteville near the granite quarries. Or you could take Hill Street and then the Windy Wood Road and see if there is a good sunset spot. This road changes it's name to the Middle Road and ends in Plainfield. Not a bad ride. For sunrise you might want to try the Von Trapps resort in Stowe. Watching the sun rise over the Worcester Mountain Range should be nice.

Thanks. Hmm. Hiking down a steep road in the dark with gear sounds.. bad. Maybe I can bribe the person at the gate to stay an extra half hour.

Understand, Charles. In 2007, I was in Shenandoah NP, and had climbed up to one of the overlooks for the sunset (alone). Even with my flashlight, it was a little spooky coming back down that mountain path, thinking about either falling, or encountering one of nature's nocturnal creatures. That time of year is a pretty good bet for bear spotting in SNP.
