Help me plan my week-long photo trip, October 15-22!

Okay folks, I need your help.

It looks like I now can't go on my annual photo trek until the 15th to 22nd or so of October, depending on how the weather is looking.

My problem is that I don't know where to go!

Some regions I am considering:

Northwest VT (Champlain valley, etc.)
Coastal Maine (too late?)
Catskills / Central NY
Connecticut (where?)

Other places?

I'm at a bit of a loss here, so any reports or projections or other thoughts are much appreciated. Thanks!

Wow. For Vt i think I would be in the Danby,Tinmouth and Middletown Springs area or the back roads of the southern Champlain Valley. If you happen to do West Haven (I like that area) stay off the Bay Road if you don't have a good 4 wheel drive. I wish I could help with PA. I did ride down through northwest (yipes) New Jersey along the Kittatinny Mountains last year about this time and saw some nice color. There is a back road right beside the Delaware River in the Delaware Water Gap National Rec Area that looks interesting. That whole area was taken over in the 1930s and everyone was moved out to make way for a dam. They never built the dam however. I wanted to do it last year but missed the turn and didn't realize until to late.

Charles, I watched your slide show and I really liked it. After watching it through once, I went back and looked at each slide one at a time and read your comments. Very Nice!

Like you, I am getting to Vermont a little late this year. I will have little time for Photography, after all I am on a business trip. But business is over on the 16th. I'm picking my wife up at the airport in Manchester, NH and we plan to spend the next week along the Maine coast. According to the Maine foliage website, the area of Downeast Maine including Bar Harbor is still only 30 - 50% of peak color. That report was dated today. My research tells me that the area around Bar Harbor has reached peak around the 20th of October for each of the last 4 years. I hope that holds true this year.

Should you decide to go to Maine, I'd be happy to hook up with you. A few years ago I met Mahesh Temba while shooting in Vermont. He's a moderator at Excellent photographer. We shared a nice afternoon together.

Hey autzig,

Thanks for the nice comments!

My current plan is to go to Maine next week. I am watching the weather and trying to plan around a few different things.

The Maine foliage report is odd. For the last two reports they have said the foliage was more advanced on the south coast than the north. I think I may just drive east from Vermont and start shooting when I find nice color, then slowly wind my way eastward.

20th seems a bit late for peak, no?

I think you mean Mahesh Thapa... great guy, never met him myself but I used to be very active on the FM Landscape forum. Not sure what the timing will be like but I'll be online so maybe we can meet somewhere.

BTW I just had someone on another forum report that Maine was rapidly going past peak even now, so I'm rather confused. This contradicts info I got from someone on MDI, though.

autzig -- I just called the Acadia visitor's center. The person I spoke with told me that they are at peak there now, and that her parents had driven through Maine and most of the region was already past. So I'm going to change gears and go to NY/PA instead I think and do Maine maybe next year.

Just FYI.
