Hi
Could someone please suggest places(spots) around Stowe(not too far) where the fall colors would be especially great. I will be visiting Stowe on 29th September and staying on Rt 100. Locations with lots of maples, woods would be ideal, especially where we could walk and take pictures and not just drive around.

Hi!
Some good spots in the Stowe area include taking the gondola ride up Mt. Mansfield on Mountain Road (Rte. 108) and walking on the trails up at the top. Of course, for good foliage, that may be a bit too high...the conifers start taking over....
...if you continue up 108 into Smugglers' Notch, there is a lot of nice foliage. A walk up to Sterling Pond (apparently a relatively easy 1 hour round trip hike from the top of the Notch--I haven't personally done it) should provide ample scenic shots. These of course won't be the sprawling vistas sort...more intimate forest type of shots. If that's what you're looking for, then the Notch is probably a good starting point.
Daniel

Generally speaking, the best colors will be north of Stowe at that time. However, Route 12 from Morrisville and Montpelier is showing some good early color right now. A good ride even without great foliage is Route 100 north to Route 58 east to Rt. 5a. and turn right. This takes you to Lake Willoughby. What a view !! If there is good color in Vt. it will be in this area and northeast of here.

Hello,
Stop at the visitor center a few buildings north of the Rt. 100 and 108 intersection in Stowe. They can provide you with suggestions and local tour routes with maps. You can always drive up to the Trapp Family Lodge and walk on one of their trails through the woods. Also, there is a 7 mile walking path from Stowe that goes west along Route 108 along a river. I will be staying next week in Guest House 26A at the Trapp Family Lodge in case you want to call with other questions. Enjoy!
------------------
Bill
