Hi Mike,
You will be in the Champlain Valley which will probably have some good early color towards the end of your stay. Early in your stay, you'll want to get to the notheast corner of the state known as the Northeast Kingdom. The further north you go, the better. Sections closest to the Canadian border (towns such as Island Pond, Averill, Canaan, Norton) will have mid-stage to near peak color. As your stay progresses, you will really see much of the northern half of the state (outside of the Champlain Valley) come to life color-wise. By the 27th-28th, many of the ridgetops (those that have deciduous trees) will be ablaze with color, and valley locations will be approaching mid-stage. The Northeast Kingdom will be pretty much at peak. Find pretty rides by Cole's pond, Stannard Mountain, and all sorts of backroads (create your own adventure). Many dirt roads are hard packed and in very good shape. They should not deter you. The southern half of the state will still be rather early in the foliage season, but the highest elevations will probably have some good color. This bodes very well for you in Burlington since the southern half would have been the longest possible ride for you anyway. Image Have a great time!!!
Daniel
