Re: Are Foliage Reports Like Ski Reports?
So far the foliage reports have been consistant: it's warm; the leaves are still mostly green; but there are patches of color here and there. The reports are subjective, but the consensus seems to be realistic and I don't get the idea they are being manipulated like snow reports issued by ski resort...

Re: What about today?
As of Monday morning Bennington and Rutland county are still mostly green in the valleys, but bright reds and yellows are starting to show up. Route 7 between Bennington and Manchester is starting to show some color for the first time, although still mostly green. I drove north on Route 7 near Rutla...

I'd stick with your plans to stay near Middlebury. By then the foliage near there may be excellent, and some of the best hikes in the state are in that area. Get the Green Mountain Club's Long Trail map. It's got the best hiking routes and concise times and instructions. Camel's Hump is a classic an...

Re: a southern belle wanting to see the foliage!
From Woodstock, the best color will be north in Essex County according to all reports. That's an easy 1 hour drive northeast from Woodstock on Route 4 to I-89 east, then I-91 north. St Johnsbury is the major town in the area. Call the Northeast Kingdom Chamber of Commerce for specific advice. 1-800-...

"I have worried about many things in my life, and most of them never happened." Winston Churchill. Personally, I wouldn't cancel. Even a week behind schedule, the colors will be close to peak by then, somewhere, and all you have to is drive around a bit. Much depends on elevation and micro-climates,...

Re: Vermont Forester's Reports - 9/27/05
Definitely not close to peak down here in Bennington County, although the color is starting to show up high around water. I drove over Kelly Stand Rd. mid-day today and there was nice color right around the ponds. Virtually no color along the road on the way down to Arlington or along Route 7. This ...

It's very difficult to get around Vermont without a car, unless you're biking, hiking the Long Trail, or on a guided tour. Unfortunately, public transportation is almost nonexistent. Manchester in the southwest corner of the state may be your best bet if a car is out of the question and you want to ...

Re: Advice for Oct 14-17
Coming from Boston, I'd stay in southeastern or central/eastern Vermont. Take route 91 north to Brattleboro, Vermont, then follow route 30 northwest 20 minutes or so to Newfane. The Four Columns Inn is a good place to stay. Great restaurant. It's less than 3 hours from Logan. From there you can take...

Re: Where to stay in south
You may not be too late for color, and staying in the north may be the best strategy. For something special, try the Pitcher Inn in Warren, Vermont, if you can get a room. It's about an hour from the Burlington airport in the heart of the mountains. Foods good. It's a Relais et Chateaux member. Lots...

Check the Inn at Willow Pond and Equinox Hotel in the Manchester area for lodging. Although it's a very busy weekend, there may be some rooms. Or call the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, 802 362-2100. The hike to the top of Bromley Mountain from route 11/30 east of Manchester is a nice dayhike on th...

PWT - I saw a northern harrier working the viewing area at Dead Creek Sunday afternoon. Was that the hawk you saw? Brown with a white rump and long wings and tail. Flies slowly close to the ground.

Re: scenic roads and loops around Mount Equinox
The foliage in Mt. Equinox area has peaked. Still plenty of leaves, but all gold/brown now. It's very scenic because there seem to be more leaves hanging on longer, BUT there's little or no red left. Troy-Bennington and Greenwich, NY-West Rupert was peaking last weekend. It might be ok this weekend....

North Hero House on North Hero Island in L. Champlain might be a good place to stay next weekend. Google them up for details. About 45 minutes from Burlington. Some bays on the L. Champlain islands will have migrating birds (and hunters, VT's duck hunting season re-opens Saturday.) Consider driving ...

Re: Any suggestions for Oct 23-24 weekend?
I drove from Manchester, VT, to Saratoga Springs, NY, on Saturday and the foliage from West Rupert to Saratoga was just reaching peak. The further west, the more green. It was at peak along the Battenkill River around Greenwich, NY. (Rt. 29) and throughout the valley between Salem, NY, and W.Rupert,...

Re: sugarhouses and red barns in southern vt
There's a nice red barn on the north side of Route 313 in Arlington. Its between 7 and 7a.
There's a marsh in front of it and Mt. Equinox behind. It's still photogenic and there's plenty of color in the background, but mostly brown and russets.
