Re: Northeast Kingdom Destinations

Ed: nice to see you back here on the forum! Sorry you were so disappointed last year, the season was just plain weird. Phil and I missed meeting up with you for Lewis Pond, it was beautiful. Hope you can return this season. I think you'll be just fine with the later dates and I expect you will find...

Re: Northeast Kingdom Destinations

Carol/Abby, thank you so much for the helpful information, I was hoping you might chime in here. Your foliage book is outstanding. It's a wonderful resource, and I highly recommend it. Last year I visited a number of NEK locations in your book, and they were great spots, it was just frustrating to h...

Northeast Kingdom Destinations

After having spent the past ten years doing most of my fall foliage wanderings/photography in NH, ME, and MA, in 2017 I decided I needed to return to Vermont again. I stayed in St. Johnsbury from 10/1/17 thru 10/5/17 and had nothing but green, and sadly brown leaf drop). :( Undaunted, I planned a re...

Re: Southern Vermont Report

I didn't make it further west on Rt. 9 than the Harriman Reservoir, so I can't speak to the Bennington / Arlington area. Wilmington was definitely past peak today (10/12). The area around Brattleboro was mostly green, with some muted/brownish color. This is definitely a strange foliage year. But the...

Southern Vermont Report

I took a drive this morning 10/12/17 to photograph sunrise at the Hogback Overlook. The foliage at the overlook and the view south was in decent shape, and is at peak. That proved to be the exception. I drove west on Rt. 9 to Wilmington and the Harriman Reservoir. The color was mostly past peak in t...

Loon at Bald Hill Pond

This year I ended up going too early to the Northeast Kingdom. I was there from 10/2 to 10/4 and everything was either green or brown. Strange progression of foliage this year for sure. The Northeast Kingdom is very beautiful however, and I hope to return next year with better foliage conditions. Ho...

Re: The Color is here!

Thanks for the reports everyone. Sounds like we will to be able to salvage an okay year in areas that were green before the crazy temperature swings.

Re: The Color is here!

Andy : An earlier post here rated the NEK as a 10 last year vs. a 0 this year, at least as far as what was around earlier this week. Dull colors, early leaf drop, dull brick reds, bare trees, thats what I saw on Monday and Tuesday in the NEK before I cancelled the rest of my hotel reservation and re...

Re: NEK from a 10 to 0

I agree the NEK was a 0 this year. I've been photographing fall color in New England for 25 years, and what I saw in the NEK this week was the worst conditions I have ever experienced. I had lodging reservations in St. J for 5 nights and cancelled them after one night. I spent an afternoon and a mor...

Re: To Anyone Already in NEK 10/1 - Current Conditions?

Thanks for the report minnesotaman. Things may be a little better since Friday with the past couple of cold nights, but that still sounds early. This may be a challenging year given the last September heat messing things up.

To Anyone Already in NEK 10/1 - Current Conditions?

I plan to begin my 6 trip tomorrow 10/2/17 by leaving my home in Massachusetts at 4:00 am and hoping to get in some nice pond/fog/reflection photography at and after sunrise (I'm crazy, In know). Based on current foliage conditions am I better off heading for : 1) May / Bean / Jobs / Newark Pond Are...

Re: Full Harvest Moon 2017- Will you be in VT to watch it rise over the mountains?

The full moon is on October 5th. Note that on 10/5 the moon rises at 6:44 pm and sunset is 6:23 pm.

But on October 4th the nearly full moon rises at 6:13 pm and sunset is 6:24 pm. That night would also be good for viewing and photographing the moon with a little more light available.

Re: Silvio O. Conte Wildlife Refuge: Nulhegan Basin Division BROCHURE

And the brochure has a nice map showing all the twists and turns in the road needed to reach Lewis Pond overlook.

Thanks for passing it along. Maybe the two moose on the cover will be there too....
