Planning a trip around Columbus Day, October 12, usually is a good bet. It's about 3 weeks after the autumn equinox and most of Vermont has had at least one hard frost by then, so the shorter days and cold weather that causes foliage color have been in play awhile.

I took Route 30 from Manchester almost to Middlebury two days ago and it was pretty nice.
Decent color most of the way. Still plenty of foliage. Not spectacular, but well worth the trip.

No traffic, although it was early Sunday morning.

The birds were definitely flighty, despite a cold wind, which I expected would keep them hunkered down grazing. Doesn't surprise me many were gone in a few hours.

We did stop and chat with the Audubon folks, who were a great help.
