Re: best routes and regions from new york city for this week
It will probably be ok driving to the top of Graylock, although the summit may be past peak. It's 15 minutes from Williamstown to Bennington on Route 7. You can also take Route 2 into North Adams and then Route 8 north to Route 9, then west to Bennington. Route 8 was decent last Saturday and it's a ...

Re: best routes and regions from new york city for this week
The southwest corner of VT is peaking now at lower elevations, and should still be good this weekend. You can either take the Taconic Pkwy north and cut over to Rt 7 near Pittsfield, MA, or go up I-87 to Albany and go east on NY 7 to Bennington. Routes 7, 7a, 313, and 30 in Bennington County should ...

Re: Fall 2006
You can go online and find many b&b and small inn reservation services that list availability, or you can go directly to specific inns sites to see if they have space. The state tourism dept. has a site that lists most lodging. www.vermontvacations.com There's wireless web access in most towns of an...

Re: Fall 2006
The states share the same latitude, weather and, for the most part, the forests are similar, so you can expect them to be very close in terms of foliage color at any given time. There are regional differences due to geography, but as a practical matter the region is so small, you can travel around t...

Re: Fall 2006
Planning a trip around Columbus Day, October 12, usually is a good bet. It's about 3 weeks after the autumn equinox and most of Vermont has had at least one hard frost by then, so the shorter days and cold weather that causes foliage color have been in play awhile.

Re: First Visit To Vermont...Staying in Middlebury...But
I took Route 30 from Manchester almost to Middlebury two days ago and it was pretty nice.
Decent color most of the way. Still plenty of foliage. Not spectacular, but well worth the trip.
No traffic, although it was early Sunday morning.

Re: Snow Geese at Dead Creek
Too bad PWT, you missed a good spectacle at noon.
The birds were definitely flighty, despite a cold wind, which I expected would keep them hunkered down grazing. Doesn't surprise me many were gone in a few hours.
We did stop and chat with the Audubon folks, who were a great help.

Snow Geese at Dead Creek
Thousands of snow geese at Dead Creek WMA Sunday mid-day, and highly visible from the road with flocks constantly in motion rising, landing, crossing the road and moving to different fields. Large flocks were in the cornfield north of the road and within 20 feet of the fence. Black ducks, a couple o...

Re: Loop from Stowe to Burlington to Addison
Kelly, See my post in reply to your earlier post today about where to go. Re. Middlebury - you can easily swing into there from Dead Creek and it's a pretty drive. The Otter Creek Bakery is worth a stop. (Middlebury at the intersection of Routes 30 and 125.) However, if you have time, Fort Ticondero...

Re: Thoughts on the rest of this season?
The color in the southwest is relatively dull too. Around Manchester and Arlington, there's a lot of yellow, but little red, and none of it very bright. The same was true in the Jamaica/Grafton/Chester/Peru region of Windham county last weekend. I was hosting a guest who had never been here in folia...

Re: Where to go for good foliage 10/17-10/21
According to the weather forecast you'll arrive about the time the sun comes out. The rain and wind have been hitting southern VT harder than the northern area around Stowe, and there may still be good color both to the east in the Northeast Kingdom and west or southwest towards L. Champlain. (Go ba...

Re: Manchester 10/15-10/17
Foliage was still fine this morning in Manchester. Quite a bit of green for the date. The new American Museum of Fly Fishing is worth a visit. Drive up the Equinox Skyline road if the sun comes out. The Indian Hill photo gallery near Pawlet (River Rd., left off Rt. 30) is a good rainy day destination.

Re: Oct 14-16 - How's the weather up there?
The weather is wet and it's supposed to rain for the next two days. I haven't heard of any flooding in the Brattleboro area yet, but there's a flood watch in effect today for that area. I'd wait and see how things develop. The roads may be fine this weekend, but it's too early to say. The main roads...

Re: Snow Geese and fall colors
The geese really do come in by the thousands and are usually very visible from the main roadside viewing area. The latest report is that there are 2,000 - 3,000 there now. They move around as they feed and aren't always visible in great numbers, so it's hard to predict the best viewing spot on any g...
