Re: Chittenden Reservoirs- morning shot with fog- how are colors?
Saturday night will be cool and clear so Sunday morning is probably your best chance.

Out on a limb prediction - late areas may be the jackpot this year
The models are showing the first real, long-duration cold weather starting late next week and going on for several days. I think this has a good chance to kick the current mostly-green areas into high gear and result in some very good color for the late areas (SW, SE, Champlain Valley) that often ge...

Thanks. I'll report back on Saturday but I've dealt with these cold fronts many a time and it's usually not a big deal if it blows a bit briefly. We shall see.

Bottom of Kelly Stand Road is in Arlington, around 1000' IIRC. Nowhere at low elevation anywhere around here is anywhere near peak. Plenty of time.

Can you show me where you see that? Thanks. Everything I've checked says winds under 10 mph.
Anyway, I have shot this area many times, if it drops, I can go next year.

We'll see. In my experience rain doesn't do much damage as long as it isn't accompanied by wind. Wind and hard freezes cause the most leaf drop. I have seen color up there as late as this weekend before and of course this is a very late year. That second shot is Searsburg Reservoir, a common target ...

Re: St. Johnsbury and north
Kelly Stand is in the Bennington area but much higher up so it peaks earlier. I plan to drive it this weekend. Bear in mind that while Kelly Stand is a beautiful drive, it's not generally a star color location. Trees in that area tend to turn more yellow than any other color, in my experience. But w...

Thanks for the post. This is my neck of the woods, and I plan to be up there this weekend, it should be peak around then. Hopefully the storm on Friday won't have too much wind with it.

Re: St. Johnsbury and north
Wow, you had some dreamy clouds. And again, glad to see the color appears to be merely late and not just skipping the season as some had feared (including me for a while). The jury is still out on the season down here. We have time -- I've got pictures of peak foliage around Bennington as late as 10...

Re: Jay Peak color
Glad to see the color is coming along and it is not drab, just late. I really had my fears for this season.
Down here everything still looks like early September and what color there is, is not impressive, and is in strange places. We still have time, so I am hopeful.

Re: Suggestions for this Friday
Just to warn you, the long-range model I follow has been consistently showing this Friday as the only very wet day predicted in the next 8. If there's any way you can make that day trip another day, it might pay off. This is subject to change of course, but that's how it is looking right now. Sorry ...

I'm encouraged, but tropical cyclones can be fickle beasts, so I will remain cautious and observant.

Thanks for the pix, they are worth 1000 words each as you know. I like that last one. But boy, it really is way late this year!
Interestingly it has been cloudy all day here down south and nice up there, glad you got to enjoy the day.

Re: Oct. 1 weather update
Away from the coast the biggest impact is rain. That's what caused nearly all the devastation with Irene. Inland winds can be strong but as soon as a storm hits land its winds immediately drop down and usually it is not any more windy than any other big storm. There are hurricanes that carry very st...
