Re: Visting over Halloween weekend

Halloween is too late for anything except small pockets of late color in VT. Mostly browns and some red sumac. Nice contrast if it snows, but not worth the trip. On the other hand, I drove to Montreal last Halloween and the color on I-87 north of Saratoga was surprisingly bright. Didn't explore arou...

Re: Trip to Weston this weekend......

Yep, Route 35 south from Chester to Grafton, not 135.

If the weather is uncooperative this weekend, Woodstock/Queechee make a good destination. Pretty drive up Route 100 from Weston, a lot of shops, Billings Farm museum is interesting, and you can get a nice lunch at Simon Pearce's in Queechee.

Re: SW Vermont report 10/13

I largely agree w/ ixl: we seemed to have peaked Tuesday or early yesterday at the mid-elevations and a lot of the color has toned down. There was even a noticeable difference between sunrise and sunset yesterday. But, it's still very pretty, if not as spectacular as it was. The yellows predominate ...

Re: Suggestions for SW Vermont for Oct 16-17

Yes, there's a covered bridge there. It's hard to photograph, but it's a nice bridge. I think the road is called Sunderland Hill at that point. It changes names several times between Arlington and Manchester.

Re: Trip to Weston this weekend......

Chester - Rt 11 east of Londonderry
Grafton - Rt 135 south of Chester
Woodstock - Rt 4, take Rt 100 north, right on 4.

Weston-Chester-Grafton is a nice loop if you take 135 southbound, and 121 northbound. The latter hits Rt 11 a few miles east of Londonderry.

Re: Trip to Weston this weekend......

You'll find more crafts stores in Woodstock, Chester or Grafton than in Rutland, and they're all easy drives from Weston. I think there's one south of Rutland in the center of Wallingford on Rt 7, the Stone House. Foliage around Weston should still be nice this weekend. It will vary by elevation, so...

Re: My planned Southern VT foliage tour

Ian, - takes about four hours to drive the loop from Brattleboro-Jamaica-Manchester-Bennington - Williamstown - I-91. Mt. Equinox is in the center of the loop, so you're likely to be there mid-day. The drive is worth it if the weather is clear. Won't be great photography from the summit, but on a cl...

Re: Getting Ready

South to North? If you're thinking about the return trip to Logan Airport, it's approximately 4 hours from Burlington to Boston, but allow for traffic once you hit Boston. Allow another 30-40 minutes to get to the airport from the outskirts of Boston. N.B. on arrival from the UK, get $20 in change t...

Re: A question for dfpvt

Haven't seen the gravestone. I'm reasonably sure it isn't on Mad Tom Notch Rd. Could well be on the road from Danby to Landgrove. That covers a lot of ground.

Re: Mt. Tabor - Weston Road status?

IXL - the Lake Shaftsbury Park area should be excellent tomorrow. The colors are peaking. Old Depot Rd. off 7a, just south of 313 should be nice, as well as the park itself. There are also a bunch of gravel roads off of Old Depot that are worth exploring. Maple Hill Rd. is a good bet although I have...

Re: My planned Southern VT foliage tour

I don't think I'd go as far north as Route 4 in one day if you want to take photos. Routes 9 and 100 are fine, but foliage may be past peak along the West River. If the foliage is still bright, I'd stop at Jamaica State Park for a walk, then turn west where 100 crosses Route 11 at Londonderry and he...

Re: Suggestions for SW Vermont for Oct 16-17

BM - thanks for the feedback on Kelly Stand Rd. The middle elevations in Bennington County seem to have the best foliage right now: still a lot of green mixed in with the red, orange and yellow. Makes sense that higher up on Kelly Stand is past peak. Manchester is close to peak now. Sunrise Sunday w...

Re: Mt. Tabor - Weston Road status?

That area started to peak two weeks ago after a hard freeze. (I was there on 10/3, drove it after hiking from Mad Tom Notch to Bromley Peak. Brilliant, late afternoon sunlight really lit up the foliage.)That road goes through quite a few microclimates, so there will be some color, but most likely pa...

Re: Getting Ready

Consider taking Route 2 across Mass., all the way to Williamstown, where you can enter Vermont on Route 7. 2 often has good foliage late in the season, particularly around the CT River and on the Mohawk Trail into Williamstown. There you can drive up Mt. Greylock and get good views of the Berkshires...
