Re: Newfane, Townshend, Grafton, Andover

I have also sometimes had success very late in the season on Grassy Brook Road, which is NE of Newfane, running through Brookline. This road runs through a long "valley"--the hills are not that high. This road is not much if there is no color. If there is color, it is best in the afternoon, after tw...

Re: Newfane, Townshend, Grafton, Andover

The road out of Newfane is called the South Wardsboro Road if you are heading out from Newfane, and, of course, if you are heading out from South Wardsboro it is called the Newfane Road. It is blacktopped as it leaves Newfane, and becomes packed gravel and dirt. To get to the Rockingham Meeting Hous...

Re: Newfane, Townshend, Grafton, Andover

It is not the Townshend reservoir that is not beautiful, of course, but the cement dam that creates the reservoir. There is a picnic area on the southwestern bank of the reservoir from which there is a view to the northeast that is very good when the color is up.

Re: Newfane, Townshend, Grafton, Andover

Yes, I am watching all of you here. And yes, I will soon be returning for the usual stay. First, I do not find many long views in the Townshend/Newfane area, so if that is what you are looking for, I think it is not likely to be attractive. Second, the time of peak in this area is difficult. The cov...

Re: Woodstock vermont

From yesterday, in Bridgewater. With the rain and wind last night and this morning, it is likely the end in the Woodstock area, even for the sheltered back roads. Fortunately, the trees will do this all again next year.

Re: Woodstock vermont

Color remains mostly yellow around Woodstock, but the rolls and twists of the back roads here compensate some for that.

It was quite windy here today, but I expect that foliage will hang on for a couple days.

Re: Newfane, Townshend, Grafton, Andover

We are here for a month. This is our thirteenth year. The first few years we came out for a week, or ten days, but we found that often our timing was off, and I would be in poor spirits for weeks, thinking I had missed the best of a season. So we soon decided to come for a month, which has enabled m...

Newfane, Townshend, Grafton, Andover

Townshend Bridge 10 6.jpg Today I went to Newfane, Townshend, Grafton, Andover, Plymouth and back to Woodstock. The Newfane Green is just starting, although several trees are bare. Saturday should be good, although the trees appear dry, so the colors are likely to be yellows. The South Wardsboro Ro...

Beaver Pond Oct 2.jpg Macks Mtn Road Oct 2.jpg Appalachian Gap Oct 3.jpg After the rain, what is left in Woodstock is mostly yellow and brown, and sticks. Time to start searching in the southeast corner of the state, and in the Champlain Valley. In the meantime, the season thus far has been wonderf...

Re: Moretown Mountain Rd. & Turkey Hill Road - worth a drive

I was on Turkey Hill Road today. Your surmise is correct. It is at peak. There is quite a bit of red. If it rains on Saturday, as predicted, I think a lot of leaves will be knocked down in that area. The street that goes up the hill to Turkey Hill is called East Street. I was also at Noyes Pond toda...

Re: Green Mountain gap roads/Waitsfield

I did not get to the Roxbury gap today, but I plan to do that in the next few days. The Rochester Bethel road looked very good, and since it is quite near to the Roxbury gap, my guess is that Roxbury is good too. I was not paying attention, and so I missed a turn on the Rochester Bethel road. What I...

Re: Green Mountain gap roads/Waitsfield

Mt Abraham Lincoln Gap Road 9 30.jpg Thanks for these great suggestions. I have been stuck with the same old places in this area for years. I decided to try the Lincoln, Appalachian, and Rochester/Bethel gap roads today. The weather was poor, except for a few minutes as I came down the western side...

Re: Woodstock vermont

CT Old Kings has always been fine by car, but it was quite rutted and slow going. However, I went up there this morning to check it out and a load of gravel and dirt, now pretty well packed, has been put on, so it is just fine. To get to Joe Ranger (other than coming up via Queechee), travel east on...

Re: Woodstock vermont

I have spent thirteen autumns in Woodstock, and I have been up and down a lot of the roads here. Someone suggested Cloudland Road, which has many great spots. It is unpredictable, and some years it just goes yellow to yellow brown. I have not been up it yet this year, I may try it tomorrow and I wil...
