Re: Lewis Pond directions

One early morning, in 2005, my husband and I ventured out from Stowe to see some of the covered bridges. We made a wrong turn onto a dirt road which followed, what later, I learned from PWT was, the Lamoille River. It was so beautiful that my eyes welled up in tears. It is the kind of scenes you re...

Thanks for the great detailed report, Carol! It soothes my worries about next weekend in the NEK. Looks like there should still be plenty of great color.

How did you go about getting permission at the Diamond Heart Farm? Did you call ahead or just go knocking at the door?

NEK and others, Is peak typically later in the St Johnsbury/Concord area? It's a little south and seems fairly low in elevation (when I look at the maps) compared to most of the NEK. I'll be up there next Saturday (10/3) and while I know I can always explore southward, I'd really like to see the NEK...

Boonlong,
Check out the two webcams at the bottom of this link. At least in those views, the colors are starting to come out but it sure doesn't look like peak to me.

If you can't find lodging easily, there are some chain hotels in Rutland. Ludlow and Killington probably have lodging available since they're ski towns. None of these places are particularly quaint though, especially Rutland. But personally I'd stay in Rutland before paying $200/night elsewhere. :D

I'm guessing the experts will tell you that the central part of the state should be looking pretty good at that time. I'm thinking Rutland/Killington north to Middlebury/Waitsfield. If the higher elevations of the White Mountains are past peak on your way to Maine, you can drive through NH's lakes r...

I did my best to map this out on Google maps if anybody else is interested. You can even send the route to your GPS. Looks like a good one, thanks NEK! http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=28+Back+Center+Rd,+Lyndonville,+VT&daddr=Pudding+Hill+Rd+to:44.612223,-72.028942+to:Underpass+Rd+to...

From_the_NEK,
Thanks for posting those suggestions. I'll be staying in Concord which is not too far from those spots. If you have any other good photo spots in the Concord area (not just sunrise/sunset) I'd love to know them.

That's a great link, ctyanky. I've been following it daily since you posted it. I notice a significant change in color the past couple days in the Walden view (the bottom image). You can just tell looking at these views that the color is going to explode! The trees look so healthy.

I was at that same show-- it was held in Coventry. It was a disaster logistically but sometimes those create the best memories. Some people waited over 24 hours on the highway, and finally abandoned their cars on the highway and hiked several miles in carrying their camping equipment, only to have c...
