Re: Visit to Vermont

The last week of September and the first week of October. However, with this dry spell we are having the trees in less than ideal soils are turning early in the north. There is some good early color north of US 2 and east of route 100. Roads like Rt. 12 and Rt. 14 north of Montpelier. Route 100 from...

GROTON STATE FOREST on route 232!! Lots of great color in the fall and take the Owl's Head road to the parking lot and hike the 0.2 of a mile to the top. The trees in Groton are young so you don't have to strain your neck to see good color.

Re: A Scenic Drive---response to MJMSS

Great rides there. The road to Trapp's is the Luce Hill Road. It's about 300 feet pass the SHED, a great place to eat and a micro-brewery to boot. The road for the 3 bridges in Northfield Falls is called the Cox Brook Road. It starts right next to The Falls General Store. However if you go south 1/3...

Re: Covered Bridges in Vermont

It depends on where you are staying in Vermont. If you are near Montpelier visit the state's Welcome Center at 134 State Street just west of the capitol. They have some "homemade" maps for the Waitsfield - Northfield-Randolph, and Tunbridge area as well as the Stowe to Montgomery Route. If not then ...

Re: Last weekend in September

Good suggestions. Only thing I would add is to take Rt. 100 all the way to Rt. 58 in Lowell and turn right and take Rt.58 east to Rt 5a and turn right to get to Lake Willoughby.

Re: Photography

The Jenne Farm Road might be a little tricky to find for a new traveler. Take rt.106 south from Woodstock. Look for the South Woodstock Country Store on your right. The Jenne Road. The Jenne Farm road is 2.9 mile south of the store and on the right side half way down a long hill. It's also about 1.3...

Re: Photography

Great choices, Tim. You may also want to routes 108, 109,118 from Stowe to Montgomery for covered bridges and scenery. Also routes 12 south from Montpelier to route 65 in Brookfield for more covered bridges. Then take route 65 east to Brookfield for the Floating Bridge. (don't splash the fishermen)....

Re: fall foliage last week in October

The best foliage for the last week in Vermont is the very southern section of Vermont. The valleys around Bennington - Manchester and Brattleboro - Newfane would be the likely areas. The highlands would be past peak.

Yeah, I do. Thanks. From the calls, letters and message board we've seen, this is going to be a big foliage season.

Re: Roads in Vermont

DKramer is right about those roads. They are either part dirt or all dirt. If you have any questions, when you take 100B and US2 in to Montpelier, instead of turning right at the first traffic light go straight and stop at the 4th building on the right. That is our welcome center. We can answer any ...

Re: Roads in Vermont

She might mean Rt.64 toward Williamstown and I-89. I would, however, go south to Rt.65 and take that road over the Brookfield Floating Bridge and then to Rt. 14.

Re: Fall Color

Well,Tim, I don't know about this year's foliage. Last year we had a real drought and the foliage was real good in northern and central Vermont. Groton State Forest Lowell-Albany-Stannard Mountain area and Peacham-Barnet area were great. If this year is like last year the colors will be intense but ...

Any road in foliage season is a good ride, but some are much better. Here are some of the best.
Route 100 from Canada to Massachusetts.
In the north; Routes 58,118,5a,108,105, and any road in the "Northeast Kingdom". In the central part; Routes 12,110,14,232,132,302/25,and routes 17,125,73 bet...
