ctyanky, the term bushwhack means there is no trail from the top of Hamilton Falls to the bottom. You have to scramble down about 30 yards through the woods to get down to the base of the falls (there is a large flat viewing area at the base, where the trail terminates). The slope is kind of steep, ...

Nice report ctyanky, it sounds like you had a really great trip. Jamaica State Park is a wonderful place, one of my favorites in southern VT. Yes, if you continue on the West River Trail, it ends at Hamilton Falls, which in my opinion is the second best waterfall in Vt after only Moss Glen in Granvi...

NEK Foliage Report 10/03/21
Today in the morning I visited Marshfield, Groton State Forest, Kettle Pond and Ricker Pond. Color there is 75% to 85% of peak, with many pockets of full peak. Colors were rich and vibrant, with no signs of brown. Ricker had slightly more color than Kettle, but both were very good. The color on Rt. ...

Re: NEK-Need Recs on Places to Visit
Tom, color north and northeast of Saint Johnsbury is 80% to 100% of peak. Scenic locations include Jobs Pond, Newark Pond, Lake Willoughby, Island Pond, Averill Lake, Forest Lake, all in the NEK. Rt. 114 is a particular scenic drive, that takes you near many of these locations. A little further sout...

Re: Artist's Bluff, Franconia Notch Nh
On 10/01/21 I drove thru Franconia Notch on my way to the NEK.
I would say the north end of Franconia Notch and Artist Bluff was 40% turned at best, and a week away from peak. Near Lincoln at the south end of the notch, it was even more green, maybe 25% of peak.

NEk Foliage Report #2 from 10/02/21
Drove north from St. J. to Island Pond, Norton, Averill, Canaan, and on to Pittsburg NH. Rained lightly all day, the colors were more saturated from wet leaves, and it was a good day for photography, with lots of fog hanging around the mountain tops too. Color in Island Pond up through Norton was 80...

Foliage Report from the NEK 10/01/21
Drove Boston to St. Johnsbury on 10/01/21. Franconia Notch and Lincoln town area were 25 to 30% turned at best. About a week later than normal, maybe 10 to 14 days later than 2020. In the immediate St. J area, I'd say 30% to 45% turned Drove north on Rt 114 to Jobs Pond, and it got better the furthe...

Re: October 11 - 15 at Franconia notch SP
I agree with loafer89 that 10/11 to 10/15 in Franconia Notch is likely to be past peak based on history. With the cold air coming in this week, I have even more confidence that will be the case For that time frame, you need to be looking at low elevation, and/or the area from Lincoln south down to t...

'I am wondering if my choice of E Burke for the 2nd half (10/4-10/7) is putting me too far out. Should I try to split the time between E Burke and, say, Waitsfield? - Given how color is progressing, will Oct 6/7 be too early for the Woodstock/Maple Hill area?" To me, staying in the Lake Willoughby a...

Re: Visitor from California - help needed to plan foliage viewing starting from NEK then going south
Prabal I stay in St. Johnsbury for it's easy access to both the NEK, and the Groton State Forest/Marshfield/Cabot/Peacham area (my favorite photography spots). In St. J you are at the junction of Interstate 91 and Rt. 2, the most significant major roads in that area. Montpelier puts you further away...

And So it Begins - Swamp Maples
As ctyanky said in her prior post, with all the rain we have had in New England this summer, it should be a banner year for early color from Swamp Maples. So inspired by her post, this week I got out for a couple days to go searching for swamp maples in eastern Massachusetts. And here are my first a...

Re: Swamp Maples Showing Bright Reds
ctyanky, great reminder for those of us who just can't wait until October. I went out for a walk yesterday with my wife, and we hiked past a small beaver pond that already had a few swamp maples that were red. The weather forecast for tomorrow is for rain, and with wet leaves the colors of turned sw...

Re: Visitor from California - help needed to plan foliage viewing starting from NEK then going south
We can share information, but frankly it's what happens with the weather after September 22nd that matters the most. It can be unseasonably warm right up through September 22nd, but then if we have 5 or 6 sunny days that have cold nights that drop into the 30's, then you could be looking at peak in ...

Re: Visitor from California - help needed to plan foliage viewing starting from NEK then going south
I would add that if you have just one week, and are starting in say the 9/30 to 10/2 time frame, I would not recommend doing the whole state in one week. Spend 3 days in the Northeast Kingdom, and 3 days in central Vermont (Woodstock/Killington). In my opinion both of these areas in general are bett...

Re: Visitor from California - help needed to plan foliage viewing starting from NEK then going south
Hi Prabal I am a long time photographer of foliage in Vermont and New England. Unfortunately there is no definitive answer to the timing question, it depends on a number of factors. The weather in late September makes a big difference. A stretch of cold nights and warm days in late September can mak...
