Re: Rt. 232 & Owls Head

At noon on Wednesday, the gate to Owl's Head was locked! I'm too old to clamber up the road to the parking lot, so we just had to move on. Very disappointed in the Park people!

Re: Lake Willoughby in summer...very early signs of fall?

We're booked for Oct. 8-13. I figure that's reasonably safe. I came solo in 1989 during the first week of October. Drove to Weston and the leaves were on the ground. Started snowing! I cut my losses and drove to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown to salvage the trip.

Re: Lake Willoughby in summer...very early signs of fall?

I'm in Texas, practically a continent away from Vermont. So is anyone hazarding a guess as to either (1) the quality of the foliage season and/or (2) the timing of the season?

Re: Have You Started Thinking About or Planning Your 2017 VT Foliage Trip?

Greetings from Texas! My wife and I will be making our 10th or 11th (lost count) visit to Vermont during the fall. Flying in on Oct. 8 and staying for 5 days. For the very first time, we are renting a secluded home...love the idea and the reviews for the place are outstanding. Hope conditions are id...

Quickie update: Weston, Benson

We were thrilled to see that the southern half of VT is coming along nicely. Spent Tuesday morning in Weston; still quite a bit of green but numerous trees near peak. The trek from Weston to Benson was memorable as there was plenty of red mixed with the usual yellow and amber. Highly recommend eatin...

Re: Oct 5 Report. Rte. 232, Owl's Head.

As noted in my post above, there is the view of Kettle Pond from the top of Owl's Head, but also a view from the right-hand path. This is that view, albeit from a lower vantage point.

Re: Oct 5 Report. Rte. 232, Owl's Head.

I think noon to 2 PM will work fine. And it's easy to spend that much time there, given the fact that the parking area is probably 10 minutes after you pull off 232...followed by the 15 minute climb...followed by more than 30 minutes of just soaking in the beauty...followed by 15 minutes going back....

No...not even familiar with that site. Should I try to squeeze it in before I leave?

Oct 5 Report. Rte. 232, Owl's Head.

You have do 232. Mercy. Today, we did Ricker Pond, hiked Owl's Head, and photographed Kettle Pond. I think peak is still 3 or 4 days away, but with frosts the last two nights, peak will come fast. My wife and I and our Texas companions are in our upper 60's. The hike up Owl's Head was strenuous. I d...

Re: St. Johnsbury and north

On Sunday, my wife and I and our 4 Dallas friends visited Strafford and Chelsea in the morning. Headed back to Simon Pearce for lunch, then blasted up the interstate to Lyndonville. From there we did most of the famed NEK route that starts at the Colonnade Motor Inn. Foliage is still a few days away...

Re: Oct. 1 weather update

New 4 p.m. forecast on Oct. 2 calls for mostly sunny daytime skies Sunday through Wednesday for sure...and the rest of the week looks good, too.

All rain has been removed from next week's forecast!

Now, the only one I checked was the White River Junction forecast, but that forecast probably covers most of the state.

Getting excited again.

Re: Oct. 1 weather update

BTW, the noted meteorologist and hurricane expert, Joe Bastardi, is calling for Joaquin to head out to sea as well. I'm getting more and more encouraged about sunshine next week. The attached graphic is from the European model's cloud cover forecast. It is its prediction of cloud cover at 1 pm Sunda...

Oct. 1 weather update

First of all, a caveat. I'm just outside Dallas, TX...not sitting in a Vermont weather service office. But I do know how to ferret out weather info - and here's what I've found. After Hurricane Joaquin formed, most computer forecast models had it eventually hugging the east coast and grazing the eas...
