State Foliage Repor for September 28th

The 2017 Vermont fall foliage season continues to develop ever so gradually, with pockets of gorgeous color to be seen in all regions of the state - especially in the Northeast Kingdom - but also with an abundance of still-green leaves remaining in most areas, said Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation Commissioner Michael Snyder this week.

As is the case with any normal foliage season in Vermont, the first wave of color has been in leaves that turn with less than full color and vibrancy, and some that drop early, including some drought- and insect-stressed trees. But with very warm summer-like weather just now subsiding in Vermont as we approach October, including recent record heat and the distinct lack of a cold spell, full foliage color and staggering vibrancy has yet to emerge.

With many green leaves intact, the big finish is still ahead for most of Vermont. The weather forecast calls for a return of more seasonal temperatures in the week ahead and that should really kick things into the next level with the full mix of great colors and brightness.


Best Bets (North to South):
– Take Vermont Route 16 north out of Hardwick and follow it through Glover and into Barton, continuing northwest to Vermont Route 5A, also known as the Northeast Kingdom Byway.

– Follow Vermont Route 5 between St. Johnsbury and Derby, passing West Burke, Coventry, and Newport.

– Take Vermont Route 114 north out of Lyndon, through East Burke, Island Pond, and up to Norton.

Hi Tim, thanks for posting.... An on the fence report, but with a ray of hope. I remain positive, and wouldn't it be grand to see the colors explode next week all at once?

I'd like to add that people shouldn't be afraid to check out the back roads that cross over the hills between these major roads! Especially if the foliage is still early down in the lower valleys.
