Foliage Report Friday Sept 22

Postby abby » Fri Sep 22, 2017 7:48 pm

Left Southeast MA at 5:30 this morning. Traveled Rte 93 north to Exit 32 Lincoln NH exit. Traveled Rte 112 West from Woodstock NH through Kinsman Notch. colors still early but look hopeful in this area. Early colors are not bad. Took Rte 116 to Sugar Hill NH. Colors coming along really quite nicely in this area. Arrived in St Johnsbury VT and colors were horrible...... muted dull ugly gold and brown. Very disappointing!! But got better. Took some back roads to Stannard Mountain Road in Wheelock to Stannard. Colors early but I wouldn't call them bad. Just early. colors at Flagg Pond in Stannard coming along nicely. Took Rte 16 from Greensboro to Barton. Some pockets of very nice early color. May Pond in Barton has decent early color. I thought Lake Willoughby was coming along nicely but Minnesota Man thought it was still green. Could be because I was only at the North end and it was late afternoon and the sun from the West was lighting up the hills nicely But I thought it looked ok. I have photos but can't post for a few days.
My thoughts: it's only Sept 22nd. It's still early and there's still a chance for a nice foliage season. I don't think it's going to be spectacular like last year but years like that don't come along very often. No matter what I'm thrilled to be here for a few days and can't wait to get back up here in a week.

Nice report Carol. I agree that last year's sensation was a top ten so we have to take what comes and enjoy the livin' heck out of it and be happy we are in Vermont for foliage season! Enjoy the weekend. CT

yes, i was at the south end of willoughby, on the overlook.

there is an element to this endeavor that is like fishing--you have to be in the right place at the right time. From the NEK regularly catches really big fish. so i am going to follow his plan and take another look on tuesday or wednesday. and also hope for a cold wave.

Sounds like a good plan Minnesota Man. I wish that colder air was going to be arriving before Thursday. But it is what it is. Have a good relaxing week.
