Need suggestions for Fall 2001 trip!

Hi folks -
My husband and I are planning our very first Fall foliage tour of New England - dates tentatively set for Sept.29 - Oct.7. We were planning on flying into Boston, staying a couple of days there, and then heading up through VT and NH. Right off the bat - how do these dates seem? Secondly, we are not really wed to the idea of starting in Boston - if anyone has any better ideas, we would love to hear them. Third, should we try to include Maine or CT in our travels? Also, where is a good place to "base" ourselves during our trip - from reading other posts to this forum, it sounds like most people recommend staying in one or not more than two places during a stay of our duration. We would also appreciate any "don't miss" suggestions for our New England visit. Thanks much for any and all suggestions!
Your dates are good. Here's an idea that's a bit different...Why not fly into Montreal, rent a car there and drive down into Vermont. It is only about one hour's drive from Dorval airport to the Vermont border. Stowe is only about two hours drive from the airport. That's far better than the three to four hour drive up into mid Vermont from Boston.
Dropping down into Vermont will let you take in the Northeast Kingdom if you take the Eastern Townships Auto Route to Magog, then head south to the border at Rock Island/Derby Line. The NEK may still have good color at that time but if not, the Stowe area will. You could base yourself in the Stowe area, then move south to the Woodstock and Quechee area.
At the end of your trip, it is an easy drive back up 89 to Montreal. Montreal is really nice in the fall too and the restaurants there are fabulous! It would be a great way to end your trip! You'll find the airport traffic much easier too!
------------------
Timothy Palmer-Benson [Mail:tim@pbpub.com]
** Web Publishing for Vermont **
*** http://www.scenesofvermont.com ***
**** Tel:802-895-4295, Fax:802-895-4635****
*****Box 219, Morgan VT 05853*****
___________________________________

What a GREAT idea - never thought of flying into Montreal, but that's what we are going to do now! Thanks so much for your suggestions - I feel like we have a little direction now and can't wait for our trip!
