Hey all,

I'm usually here in the fall but I'm trying to break my seasonal rut. Might be up in the Champ valley this weekend.. how's it looking up there?

Any "must shoot from" spots anyone would care to recommend?

This morning's weather report doesn't look great. We will have unsettled weather which means possible showers and a few breaks of sunshine. Photo opportunities are few around Burlington at this time. There are some nature trails nearby with early wildflowers. Check the nature conservancy website for ideas. There is also a good trail on the Missisqoui Wildlife Refuge. It's off route 78 about 2 miles west of Swanton Village. The parking area is just past the Blue Ford Motel and on the left side.There are a some osspreys nesting on the power poles along route US 2 near Sandbar State Park. I wish I could help you more but I've been consentrating on the back roads.

Current plan is Mon-Wed of next week; weather should be better. Planning to do shooting in many areas around the NW corner of the state.

I'm pretty good at making opportunities for myself. As long as things are growing I should be okay.

I like back roads too, I won't be in the town itself much.

Do you think I'd be better off instead tro wait until Mem Day weekend? That's my next opportunity if I don't go next week. But I thought by then it might be looking more like summer than spring.

Those ^%#&@ weatherfolks keep changing the weather report, so I can't be sure how it will be. Right now WCAX TV shows Monday as mostly cloudy with a chance of shows and Tuesday as partly cloudy with a chance of showers. I would probably rule out long hikes. The back roads in NW VT aren't all that great for photos except along the lake. The shore roads in the Islands and from Basin Harbor in Ferrisburg down to Orwell can be nice. The back roads along the west side of the mountains are good also. Areas would be; Fletcher, Fairfield, Bakersfield to Montgomery in the north and Huntington, Starksboro, Ripton, and Goshen in the southern region. If you come on Memorial Day I recommend the Dog Pond Road in Woodbury. Right across from a mailbox with the number 1580 is a patch of Showy Lady Slippers. These are NOT your regular Laddy Slippers. Bring boots, it's wet in there.

I don't use the weather forecasters, I read the models directly. Looks like Monday is variable, and Tue/Wed will be mostly okay with some instability and a chance of showers. That's good actually, prefer that over plain blue skies.

I am actually planning to spend most of my time around the area of the lake itself so it sounds good. I'll share a photo or two when I can.

With the rain we've had the wildflowers are popping up all over the place. Unfortunately, so have the bugs. I was taking some photos of some "Dutchman's Britches" on the County Road at the Calais/Woodbury Town Line and those black flies were pretty hungry.
