Early fall color?

We're a California couple, taking advantage of a business trip in Boston to hopefully take a spectacular fall color driving trip through Vermont, and possibly Maine and NH. We'll be leaving Westborough, MA (West of Boston, in between highways 190 and 495) at noon on Sept. 22, and need to be back in Boston the evening of the 25th or 26th.

Your scenery all looks so lovely, but we'd love advice from those "in the know" which routes you advise us to take to maximize our color tour before the October high season.

Thanks for the suggestion to go waaay North. Are there specific routes you suggest, so we see prime scenery and hopefully also some fall color? - PL

Thanks for all the suggestions Any suggestions for the most scenic way to get to Lyndonville? Or should we beat feet on the freeway and then transition to smaller roads once we're further North?

Also, any suggestions for swinging over to NH or Maine after we tour Vermont?

If you are near Colebrook, NH take route 26 south through Dixville Notch and you will hit route US 2 just above Bethel, Maine.
