Hello! My husband and I have made reservations at an inn on Lake Willoughby for Oct. 12-15, 2001. Will there be much color by the time we get there? We are yearning for peace and solitude near water, near mountains, near color.... do you think we will find it? I am beginning to second-guess staying in the NEK... Should we move our vacation a little further south? <BR>Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!<BR>

You will be a little late for foliage in hte Northeast Kingdom in Mid-October. Your best bet would probably be the Berkshires. If seeing color is really important, then I would definatly re-think your plans. Sorry! That said, the Lake Willoughby area is beautiful and you've picked a great place to stay. It's beautiful any time of year up there IMO!

All of the above is true...Lake Willoughby is quiet, serene and beautiful, but you'll be a bit late for lots of color. You might try Lake St. Catherine south of Rutland or Lake Bomoseen for better color at that time. Lake Fairlee and Lake Morey are also serene and beautiful, but they're a little further north of the others I mentioned, although near the CT River Valley, which is usually more temperate and more southern-Vermont in climate than further inland areas at the same latitude.
