What you are looking for can be found almost anywhere in Vermont, but all of us who live here have our favourites.
Here is my shortlist, all from the wild and woolly Northeast Kingdom! Doubtless Susanne, our very knowledgeable moderator, will have more ideas!
Craftsbury Common, Craftsbury (half hour from Stowe approx.)
Peacham ...just south of St. Johnsbury
Montgomery...foot of Jay Peak

------------------
Timothy Palmer-Benson [Mail:tim@pbpub.com]
** Web Publishing for Vermont **
*** http://www.scenesofvermont.com ***
**** Tel:802-895-4295, Fax:802-895-4635****
*****Box 219, Morgan VT 05853*****
___________________________________

Hi, Suzie,
Tim is correct, those places he recommended are very quintessential New England, and the thing is, nearly everywhere you look in Vermont you'll find a postcard opportunity! My personal favorites are Waitsfield and Warren in the Mad River Valley--Rte. 100 about halfway between Killington and Stowe (slightly closer to Stowe). The Pres. Calvin Coolidge Homestead in Plymouth Notch (Rte. 100B south of Rte. 4, Bridgewater) is lovely, a well preserved historic site, too, and known as the best preserved Presidential birthplace in the U.S. Then, you shouldn't miss Woodstock and Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Park, the birthplace of the environmental movement--they'll tell you why. Middlebury along Rte. 7 is lovely, and you can take one of our stunning gaps to get there via scenic Rte. 125 out of Hancock, just south of the Mad River Valley. If you're meandering down Rte. 100 from Stowe to Killington, be sure to take a detour into the Village of Stockbridge--you'll be in the town on Rte. 100, but if you take a left at Ted Green Ford and go up the hill, you'll come to an absolutely charming (and relatively unknown) village that is off the beaten path with lovely historic buildings and homes. If you have time to do the Northeast Kingdom and then head over Rte. 2 from St. Johnsbury or over Rte. 302 from Wells River, you can pick up Rte. 100 and head south through the beautiful river valleys the road follows. You ought to not miss Peacham as you head west from the NE Kingdom. Hope this doesn't overload you, and enjoy your visit! Susanne
