Where to find maximum reds oct 2-3?

I and my wife love the foliage season in New England and this weekend we are headed for a trip to VT-NH (for the third consecutive year!). Last year we had to stick to southern parts of the state since we reached 2 days after the 60mph storm had passed New England. This time I?m really hoping to see the northern region which is always highest praised. I?m trying to chalk out routes that will offer maximum reds on Oct 2nd and 3rd without any hiking. I read in the forum, to try higher elevations for best views. Are there any driving routes for higher elevation or is hiking the only option? Are there any areas of VT/NH that might be past peak on Oct 2-3? Is there any foliage train ride that might be worth going for in a trip as short as 2 days? I would really appreciate any suggestions for the routes. Itinerary is
10/1 Friday DFW-BOS, night near BOS
Saturday BOS to northern NH, night at White river junction
Sunday northern Vermont, night near BOS
monday morning BOS-DFW
Thanks!

Northeast Vermont from route 100 and east and from route 15 and north. It's "popping" up there right now. In New Hampshire anywhere above route 112.

Is the Jay - Hazen Notch - Route 58 area presently as nice as the route 100 northern area, for the view and for photography?

Thanks

Pierre

With regards to my question above, I must add that I'm coming from Montreal, just for the day, so I can't go too far.

This is why I'm looking at the Jay area or northern route 100 area.

Thanks

Pierre

YES !! The only train right now is the Green Mountain Flyer way down in Bellows falls,Vt. There are some train rides in Conway,NH. The Conway Scenic ride is OK. The Notch Ride from Conway through Crawford Notch is great but expensive. And of course there is the Mt. Washington Cog Train. Incredible but expensive. It's off route 302 in Faybian, NH.
