Hi,

We are planning to visit NH and VT on Oct 2nd and 3rd. Is it too early? Or should we wait untill the week after?

What will be the good routes in VT during this time. I have read the earlier replies on this for this weekend. But wanted to confirm if things have changed. I would appriciate the help.

Thanks, Bhavdeep

Hi Bhavdeep,

It really depends on where you want to go in NH/VT. The northern parts of both states should be spectacular at that time, as well higher elevations in the middle of VT and even southern VT. The White Mountains of NH will also be good.

If you come a week later you will find good color further south and lower down.. so it just depends on where you want to go. Check out some of the excellent reports in this forum from pwt54, bm, and others. --c

For starters, here is a good URL for tracking NH foliage conditions. Look near the bottom and you will also find some specific route recommendations for the Whites.

The "classic" White Mtn road is the Kancamagus Highway, route 112, which runs between Lincoln and Conway, NH. Other good roads IMO include route 3 from Lincoln to Twin Mountain, 302 from Twin Mountain to Jackson, and the 115 loop from Twin Mountain around through Gorham and down to Jackson. Bear Notch Road is also nice... between Bartlett and Route 112. --c

Yes and Yes! Good time to be up here and great roads in NH. One problem in that area, the Fyreburg Fair just across the Maine border near Conway, Nh. will be starting on Oct. 3rd. Rooms will be very hard to find within a 30 mile radius. You should look in Lincoln, Franconia, and Littleton, NH or Portland Maine for rooms if you don't have one reserved.

Harrisburg ?? I go down through there every spring on my way to visit my sister in Florida! Usually stay in Carlisle of Frackville. Love riding up and down the escarpments. Don't care much for the Ravine fog, however.

You know. I have a question for you. What's route US 209 like? I don't really need awesome views. I just want to try a new route. I'm planning to pick it off I-81 above ( gasp )Ravine.

Hi pwt54,

I am not sure if this question was for me. I have no idea about this route. Sorry

Yes that was for you. No problem, I love surpises. The north end of the road goes through Dingman's Ferry abd the Poconos, so it can't be all bad.

I am worring that Oct 9-11 weekend is too late, but you are worring Oct 2 is too early. Good thing is that at least one of us will see the peak.

Good luck,

Kai
