I drove my favorite roads in the Woodstock/Pomfret/Quechee area today. This area is still generally green and summery, although in the last two days some yellows have developed on a few roads. Foliage here looks sturdy enough to endure a few days of rain without much adverse effect. This is an August-like Cloudland Rd this morning. It needs a week to ten days, and a couple more cold nights.

In my base territory, still (!!!) early. along the ottaquechee a lot of leaf drop, but up in the hills, a lot of green, and not much leaf drop. the hill roads look like they will be very good in a few more days. it feels like a very good season ahead here.

Nice shots even with the green! If this season lasts two more weeks, I'm coming to Woodstock for the day before the end of the month! Praying that the winds and rains stay away until then!

It might last that long in the woodstock and pomfret hills. Bridgewater looks to be a bit farther along, but not much. It really is a sort of slow ripening this year.

I like the slow ripening scenario. Gives me time to tool around my own state and also combine it with more day trips to VT. Pretty sure after Thanksgiving, I'll be hibernating for a bit. These day trips can take a toll on you in the long term!

Sigh, our last day here headed home tomorrow, wish it was possible to stay the whole month!

Drove to Woodstock today, out to Jenn Farm then out along Cloudland Road and Pomfet. Colors still nice but starting to fade and leaves starting to drop. Coming down south along I 89 the colors looked awesome.

Cloudland Road this morning. Indeed, the leaves are starting to come down here, but there is still some color to squeeze out. Rain tonight and tomorrow are likely to take things to the essentials, however. Time to examine Vermont agricultural architecture!

For all those still in VT, or coming up soon, there is some leaf drop in Woodstock/Pomfret/Quechee/Bridgewater, but the hills around here are still very good. Cloudland, Galaxy Hill, Old King's Rd, Joe Ranger Road, Webster Hill Road, Goldcoast Rd, North Bridgewater Road, Jenne Farm are all still good. Cloudland Rd this morning:

Yesterday I started at Jenne Farm. It was packed, as usual, with photographers. The cows were in the field where photographers usually set up, and were actually wandering between the tripods. It was bright, but mostly oranges, and fragile looking. From there I went from Woodstock to Rutland along 4, and then south on 7 to Manchester, with a detour in the Danby area. Color was still pretty good on 4 toward Killington, but looked like it was just hanging on. 7 was generally good starting a few miles south of Rutland, and a bit less fragile looking. Colvin Hill Rd in Danby was just ok, not bright. It looked past peak, or maybe it never got there, I could not tell. I attach a photo to illustrate the point. Manchester had some individual trees that were bright, some that were loosing leaves, and some that were green. The hills around Manchester looked like the Colvin Hill view--some reds, but not bright, a lot of oranges, but a bit burned, some yellow. Perhaps someone more familiar with that area has some tips, absent that I did not see anything that would cause me to drive back down there.

We had moderate rain here (Woodstock area) this morning for about 30 to 45 minutes. This took a toll, and appears to have dashed hopes for an additional few days of good color, although there still are a few pockets in sheltered areas. But, for the most part, quite a few trees are showing a lot of sticks now. Colors that remain are quite muted compared to two days ago. I will be out in the morning for a better look. I am not expecting to be delighted.

In the last day I saw good color in NH along 89, Sunapee and south and towns in that general area.

I drove all over Woodstock, Pomfret and Bridgewater this morning. Many roads in this area now are sticks and ochre, some smashes of orange. There is a pretty strong wind today, and there are a lot of leaves, and a few flurries, in the air. It is Novembrous. Stay with areas that are sheltered from direct wind, like hollows and western sides of hills, and you will still find good color here for another day or two. That's about all that is left.

Color is all gone here now, but it was a good season, I think. Jenne Farm standard, from Gold Coast Road, and at Line Pond:

MINN: you had a great month here. Most of us would be envious to stay in VT for that length of time. You must be a little sad to end your trip. Can you tell me where Line Pond is? Never heard of it. Gold Coast Road looks beautiful as well.

Line Pond might be more appropriately called Line Puddle. It is tiny.

Start on the Pomfret Road, going north out of Woodstock. About 50 yards south of the Pomfret town house, on the left, is Stage Road. Take Stage Road all the way into Barnard. The road will fork at a place where there is a very lonely cemetery with about fifteen graves in it, called the Perkins Cemetery (it has a little, but visible, sign). The left fork is Stage Road. The left fork is Line Pond Road. Go a few hundred yards. Line Pond is on the right. A power line hangs across the pond, from south to north which mars it some, and requires that you maneuver a bit to find a good angle. I got there the first morning we had a hard frost around here, and the tall grass around the pond was thick with frost.

minnesotaman: when are you and your wife in Woodstock? I'm there 10/1 and 10/2 with bm. If you are around we could meet at the Worthy Kitchen for lunch or dinner. Just let me know. It's possible you are starting out in the Whites but I couldn't find it in any posts. I'm leaving Monday a.m. the 3rd to meet Carol in Barton for a week. Hope we can get together finally......
