Scenes of Vermont Forums

I would like to thank the moderators and members of this forum for sharing not only outstanding photographs, but also endless travel information and guidance for the great state of Vermont and good natured bantering. I have been shooting digital and reading photo forums for at least 9 years and SOV is absolutely one of the best!

I have always enjoyed visiting Vermont, most of my visits were to the time in the Burlington area since a good friend as well as my brother and sister attended St Mike's College(I am a Mass native).

I made my first planned foliage/photographic trip in '08 in Bennington shooting the covered bridges. Then in '09 spent a day in the Woodstock area shooting the well known farms and villages. I am looking forward to visiting the NEK this fall. My family and I spent 6 or 7 February vacations skiing at Burke mountain, but I haven't been there for almost 8 years now. I will be reading the forum intently for NEK reports, routes, etc.

I missed the '10 foliage season. I enjoyed my -08 & '09 trips so much that I hope to make a trip every fall and possibly extend my day trips to a few days of shooting.

Jack: Carol (posts as Abby here) and "From the NEK" are our resident experts on the NEK here. CTYanky also has a pretty good handle on it, as does pwt (who I think has been on every road in the State). Watch for their posts and seek their advice.

As a photographer DO seek out the Burton Hill Road shot in Barton. its an early morning shot and is a don't miss op in my view (directions in the pdf).

Hi Jack: First I would like to say it is nice to have you back posting on the forum. So welcome back!

Secondly, your compliments are well appreciated, certainly not just by the moderators, or by our SOV administrator Tim, but by all the wonderful contributors to this foliage forum. There is none like it anywhere! This is real, up-to-date and factual information from those who live there as well as those who travel frequently or even just occasionally, to our beloved Vermont.

Moderators and posters alike, contribute for the good of all traveling to the state. The goal is to share information of any kind so that everyone enjoys every bit of Vermont whether it is traveling the backroads, great locations for photography, activities, places to dine, lodge or just relax - it is all here on the Scenes of Vermont.

On another note, I'm glad you mentioned the good natured bantering that goes on in this forum. To me, this is one reason why the SOV foliage and photography forums are so successful. It makes folks feel welcome and at ease. To just present facts each time someone posts is not the same without occasional joking around, poking fun at our fellow posters or some teasing and sarcasm here and there. Goodness gratious, life is meant to be fun!

There have been some incredible friendships made on this forum. In past reunions or meetups, which are open to all, when we have met, it felt like we had known one another for a long time.

Thanks again for your very upbeat post and enjoy Vermont this season. There are other forums on the SOV website such as the activity forum and the musings forum which are most enjoyable, especially if others join in. The moderators try their best to keep things hopping, but welcome everyone to share their experiences as well. Hope you have time to peruse them and maybe add some ideas of your own!

Welcome Jack--Patti and I will be driving around the NEK Sept 26th or 27th, and will report to the forum that evening what we saw. We will be taking Rt 114 to Rt 105 to Island Pond(think pwt said north of there Rt 105 is closed) and then onto Northern NH--NEK is one of our favorite areas for many years, beautiful color there in 2003, 2005, 2008, and 2009--

hmmm Andy..... seems I learned my bantering skills from you. After all you are the "site admin". A fine teacher you are indeed. I'm just the moderator.

It must be your issues of power and control that I just can't seem to get a grasp on..... you know, the lawyer personality?

The Windmills in Sheffield may spoil or enhance you photos, depending on how you feel about windfarms. I can see them on Hinton Hill and the Candlepin Restuarant in Barton.

Andy, I will keep an eye out for the NEK reports. The other area I had been considering, depending on how the colors develop and the weather, is Stowe.

Abby, the past few years I have done day trips. I live just off I-93 a few miles north of Boston. It's a bit of driving but it's definitely worth it. I generally depart around 5:30 am and get back home around 10:00pm. This year I am planning on driving north the night before so I can get an early start, around sunrise, on the next day. Since I live relatively close and have flexibility for tasking time off from work, I don't plan the day until we're getting close to peak. If possible I like to go during the week to avoid congestion.

pwt, Do you have any shots from those locations that you've taken in the past?

Just a quick question on posting photos. Is the preferred method to embed images or provide links?

Jack: In Stowe, I think the Grand View Farm shot is the real gem. Directions in the pdf. It is an afternoon shot.

The windmills seem to fit into the landscape pretty well. Thank you Carol for sharing.

Andy, I was reading your pdf when you posted the photo of the Grand View Farm. Your pdf along with Arnold Kaplan's little yellow book were INVALUABLE on my trip in '09 to Woodstock, Corinth, East Orange, East Topsham, Peacham, etc. Thanks again.

For anyone who is traveling to the areas listed above and are not familiar with Andy's pdf and Arnold Kaplan's book, I recommend you get them. I would have never found all the locations without them and the many posts from other forum members. I traveled with both books along with printed copies of posts from the forum.
