Scenes of Vermont Forums

First, let me thank this forum Administrators and all contributors for helping me organise my trips to Southern Vermont and Middlebury area in previous years. This year, my plans are even more specific and they involve Northern Vermont. I plan to stay in White River Junction area and to make sunrise / sunset trips to photograph the following Vermont icons: 1) Sleepy Hollow farm on Cloudland Rd, 2) Peacham village 3) Hillside Acres Farm 4) East Orange village 5) Glenn Moss falls 6) Rickers Pond in Groton forest 7) Watts River village. Based on my research of the forum, I believe September 29 through October 2 would be better option than October 6 through October 10. Most of the helpful posters on this forum believe that October 8 weekend would be past peak in Northern Vermont and in Killington area. Did I make the right conclusion?
Also, I probably should be planning for road closures and many detours this year. Are you aware of any problems to reach the specific places I mentioned above? How are the roads around Montpellier, Woodstock, Peacham , Groton Forest, and Stowe?
Any information and suggestion will be very helpful.

You should note that most of your listed scenes are afternoon destinations (Waits River, Ricker Pond, East Orange, Hillside Acres and the "primary" Peacham scene.) That leaves mornings open. East Corinth is a morning shot. You may also consider going to Barton and shooting a couple of the morning scenes there. Also the shots in Waitsfield.

You should also be prepared to be dissappointed in East Orange. My last trips there showed very little clear view from the high road. Do you have my pdf guide?

Thanks for update on East Orange. Yes, I have seen your PDF guide. I do not take my camera out of bag after sunrise or before sunset. So I guess I will be better off with late afternoon shots.

If you are talking about Moss Glens Falls in Granville, then there may be a problem getting there. Route 100 took a bit hit from Warren all the way down to Wilmington. Route US 4 between Rutland and White River is closed right now, but it is expected to be open by this weekend. We aren't getting many reports on the town highways right now, so I can't tell you if the Cloudland Road is okay.

Thanks, pwt. I saw that 100 is blocked near Granville. My intent was to use I-89 to get on route 100 North above the roadblock and then go South. From what I can see, Rt 12 is closed above the point where the side road (can't see its name) branches off Rt 12 to go to South Pomfret. Sleepy Hollow farm is there, correct? Thanks.

Congrats on having so much planned out!

One comment on not taking the camera out between sunrise and sunset. One of the many things I love about VT is that the nooks and cranies of the landscape and the shade of the forest do allow me to shoot during hours I typically avoid elsewhere. Just a thought.

That being said, if a non-photographer is along, taking that break during the middle of the day does give you that time where you can resort to just being a tourist which can make your traveling companion a bit happier. My wife has learned to accept that compromise and I usually am good about honoring it. So, I can see the pluses to your previously stated plan.

First of all, your photos are fantastic. In case you didn't realize your site is password protected but I was able to guess the password using the hint given.

Second, I agree that 9/29 - 10/2 would be better, although I think there is a decent possibility that will be prior to peak for a lot of those areas. But I tend to think going early is better. I like when there's still some green and little leaf loss than 100% color with leaf loss. So my suggestion would be to have some alternate spots handy in case you need to head further north for color. As has been mentioned, the roads should be in better shape up there.
