A Sparkling Winter Day in Vermont 1/17/11! What fun!

Truly enjoyed my day trip to Vermont yesterday. Vermonters sure know how to take care of their roads! Left early in the morning and took NY state route 22 up to North Petersburg and then on 346 east to Pownal. (thanks Charles/ixl - always love this route). I couldn't miss two of my favorite roads in VT, Carpenter Hill Road and Monument Road up to the Bennington Monument. The views off of Carpenter Hill were stunning - the monument stood out so clearly! This road is a great one for beauty and long views so keep it in mind! It is a dirt road that turns paved and has many orchards paralleling the road. The homes on Monument Avenue are historic and huge and sure to emit a "wow, wow, wow"!
The skies were chrystal clear and azure blue; the white landscape and mountains just serene and beautiful. We stopped at the Monument, the Old First Church and graveyard and took a lot of pictures of that amazing fence! The Blue Benn Diner was packed and the wait too long so we headed to Manchester and ate at "Up Breakfast" for one of the most delicious meals I've ever had. I would highly recommend this place. It was so filling we didn't need lunch!
Headed east on 11 and went up to Ludlow and stopped at the Green Mountain Sugarhouse for maple creemees and goodies and gifts. bvahjen from our forum recommended a nice Irish pub in Chester for late lunch but we were stuffed so drove by it! Will definately stop here in the future. The town looked lovely in all the snow.
With their recent snowfall, the fields were smooth as silk and pristine white with fresh tracks all over - it was just gorgeous! Also enjoyed watching the folks ski down the various mountain resorts we passed.
Can't wait to get back up next month for another day trip. I hope to make it up there one day each month until the foliage fandango begins!
