what to see if i come at oct 5 for 2 days from nyc?

hi,
i never been to vermont and i would like to rent a car and come to vermont from nyc at october 5th and come back to the city october 6th at the eve.
i would like to see the foliage, but i prefer parts that are colser to NY, cause the driving is long. have any recomendations for me?
i need also to find a place to stay. any website that you know?
