Dear Locals,
We are planning to visit Vermont during Oct 12-15, driving from North eastern part of New Jersey,Any suggestion on what route we take and should we be staying to the southern part of Vermont at that late part of the foliage season? Thanks you in advance for your help.
Frank

NW CT will be at or just about peak mid Oct. Take Route 7 North of New Milford along to Housatonic River to Lime Rock (Salisbury). This is a beautiful road. Stop in West Cornwall where there is a pretty red covered bridge and a cute village with shops. Route 7 into North Canaan, Great Barrington and points North gets too commercial. I suggest taking Route 41 North out of Salisbury (next to the White Hart Inn). If you have time take a walk up Race Brook Falls just beyond the CT/MA line. Route 41 takes you to South Edgarmont, Mass. If you feel like an adventure, instead of taking Route 41 North, go up Riga Road next to the Salisbury Town Hall. Watch for the fork in the road (don't go Selleck Hill), continue up Riga Road, it turns to gravel, goes past a beautiful lake, bear right at the lake (top of the hill). Also, be sure to look for the cascading waterfall on the rt. where the road just starts to level off, before the lake. Continue to Mt. Washington, Mass. Visit BashBish Falls (a little detour). Mt Washington Rd. will take you to South Edgarmont where Route 41 goes. From there, maybe take Route 7 North to get into VT more quickly. Route 9 Bennington to Wilmington is very beautiful! You will be up high with good views. Then go to Grafton, Chester, and wander....... Detailed maps are a must. The Vermont or CT or Mass. Atlas & Gazetteer map books are excellent. Last year VT was just a little ahead of CT with the timing of peak leaves. It will be beautiful. Sometimes during mid to late Oct. in VT you will get a light snowfall. That experience is incredible with many brightly colored leaves still on the trees and the mountain tops coated white with fresh snow. The town of Calais, just North of Montpelier is also a beautiful town for views looking toward Stowe and the Worcester Range. My husand and I will be camping at our property in VT this weekend. Can't wait!
