Hello
Me and my father will be in the St Albans area for 3 or 4 days. We should be in Vermont from around the 6th-11th of October...are my chances good for catching peak areas? Also, I would love some advice on day trips. I was hoping we could venture over into New Hampshire if it is not too far for a day trip and perhaps wonder into Canada one day. In addition, we are driving up from North Carolina, and AAA is suggesting we come up thru eastern NY state and catching the ferry over at Port Kent into the Burlington area. On the return trip, I was thinking about driving east and catching I-91 and following it down to the Brattleboro area and then following Route 9 back over into eastern NY state. Does this plan sound feasible?? Any advice or tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help in advance!! Susan

You can take that ferry ( exit 34 Keeseville)or get off at exit 28 and take route 74 east through the Paradox Lake area to Ticonderoga,Ny. At the intersection of route 22, turn left and go about 10 miles. Look for a sign that says " Bridge to Vermont". Turn right on that road and go over the bridge into Vermont. You will be on Vt. route 17. Take that to route 22a and turn left and go to route US 7 north to Burlington. ( about a mile before the jct. of 22a you will come to the Dead Creek Wildlife area. The Snow Geese will be there by then. Might want to stop and take a look.)
I take this route every year when I go to visit my sister in "Jax" Florida ( I take I-81). Peak colors will be well south of St.Albans at that time. Your return trip through Brattleboro should show some real good colors. A trip to New Hampshire will be a full day trip. From St.Albans, take route 104 south to route 15 in Cambridge. Turn left and take route 15 east to the end at Us2 in West Danville. Turn left and take US 2 to the jct. of I-91 south. Take I-91 south to I-93 at exit 19. Take I-93 through Franconia Notch to the Lincoln/Woodstock exit. From there take route 112 east (the Kancamagus Highway)to Conway,Nh. Take route 302 north from there back to I-93 north and go back to St.Albans the way you came. The foliage will be about gone , but the scenery is fantastic. Reminds me a bit of the "Parkway' above Blowing Rock. Have fun.
