Where to stay in Southern Vermont

I'm planning to visit Southern Vermont on October 7 - 9. I have a 7 month son who will be traveling with me. I've gone through all the online reservation systems and there are some vacancies left, but I don't know where anything is located. We would like to be closest to the downtown area (shopping, resturants, etc.) Any recommendation for kid friendly, inexpensive ($100-$150) lodging?<P>Thanks.
