Re: Killington Report - September 28
Nice photos. The color on the mountain looks pretty good to me. I hope we get the chance to make some foliage and night sky photos. Unfortunately, the 10 day weather forecast doesn't look promising. If that tropical depression follows the forecasted path, we could have a very wet Vermont visit. Al

Re: Top 10 Places to see Foliage in the US
Portland, Oregon at Number 9!??? I lived there for 4 years. Residents would go into the Cascade mountains looking for colorful vine maples. There are thousands of square miles of forest land around Portland but the Douglas fir doesn't change color. I love Portland, but it is not a fall foliage desti...

Re: Gear on the move
Dean, if you will be shooting into the sunrise in the morning, I would opt for the sunset photo. If you are shooting into the sun, the sky will be white. At sunset you should have a blue sky and if there are clouds, that could also be nice. If there are clouds that would light up nicely in the AM, I...

Re: Gear on the move
Which shoot would you choose: 1) pre-rise and sunrise or 2) sunset? Dean, I don't think that way. I identify places I want to photograph and let the conditions dictate when and how. If I see fog in the valleys or what looks like it could be a colorful sky, I go to the place where I think I can make...

Re: Heat coming back
I had 44 degrees at my house in the Twin Cities this morning. Hopefully that cold air will make its way to Vermont. I've noticed some maples starting to show color here.

Re: Gear on the move
Dean, maybe this sounds crazy, but I always carry everything. My backpack can be pretty heavy but I don't want to have just climbed up 600 feet of elevation and wishing I had another lens. One of the best pieces of advice I ever got came from Robert Glenn Kethum. He was leading a workshop I attended...

Re: Much above normal temps next days or so
Here in Minneapolis, we've had a warm but not hot, humid summer. We usually hit 90 degrees on 15 days each year. So far this year we reached 90 degrees only 4 times. Precipitation has been above normal. While we are having high temperatures in the 80s now, highs by next weekend will only be in the 6...

Re: Name Your "TOP THREE"
I've been thinking about this, and I too, find it difficult to stick to the three place limit but I'll try. Places: 1. Dead Creek Wildlife area near Addison in western Vermont. I visited this place once and was disappointed until a flock of a bazillion snow geese circled and landed. This was a prett...

Re: Editing photos
I don't really care whether someone replaces the sky or not, so long as the photographer discloses that fact if he is selling it. If someone doesn't like sky replacement, to what extent is manipulation of the photo acceptable. Is it OK to add saturation or to remove distracting things? Should a phot...

Re: Questions about Owls Head and Kettle Pond
Tim, Lanesboro Road is the road to Owl's head. I don't know that it is marked though. You will see a gate near the Highway 232 that marks the road up there. I've been there several times and have had no problem finding it. Just keep in mind that the gate is closed at night and it may not be open in ...

I don't know what you are looking for, but I often use Vacation Rentals by Owner (VBRO). Here's a link to available houses near Barton. We've rented places through VBRO and have always been very happy. http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/vermont/barton Hope you can find a place and join us. Al

You can get an app for a smart phone called Aurora Forecast. It will give you a lot of data regarding the Aurora and where it can be seen. It will also send alerts to your phone. If you don't have a smart phone you can get an Aurora forecast here: http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-30-minute-f...

Re: The Great Fall Get Together
I used Google Earth to scout Noyes Pond and it looks like it would be a great place to photograph the Milky Way. We could get star reflections in the water if it is calm, there is a mountain in the background which can block light pollution and it looks like we can have easy access to the shoreline....

Re: The Great Fall Get Together
I will be staying with Carol in Barton but I don't have any sites picked out. She knows the area far better than I so I will defer to her judgment about locations. Noyes Pond may be a good location. I'll do a Google Earth search to see what I can find there. I find it to be a great scouting tool.

Re: Photographing the milky way
Nice Milky Way shots! Where did you make these photos. While there is a lot of light pollution in the foreground, the Milky Way looks good. I use two apps to track the sky. One is Cloud Map. It displays a satellite image of the visible cloud cover from a number of weather stations. It is really good...
