Carol, I'm sort of a wool expert. The friend I mentioned did everything with wool and we helped her. We started with the fleece that needed to be cleaned so we cleaned it, dyed it carded it, and even spun it. Worsted wool uses the long fibers from the fleece. This is the stuff used to make men's sui...

I bought a forest green wool coat the first time I visited Johnson Wollen Mills. I love it but it is getting worn out. I always stop in to browse when I pass through. Last time I bought a pair of those mittens where they fold back exposing the fingers. Great for winter photography. Carol, I have a f...

I spent a little time last weekend along Lake Superior in Northeast Minnesota. Here's what I found. Split Rock Lighthouse http://www.goldimagesphoto.com/mn003.jpg When strong winds on Lake Superior drive ice flows ashore, they break up into boulder size glacieral blue chunks and pile up ten feet hig...

I carry my Canon 40D with a 24-70L lens attached. I can also fit a 70-200, a 180 macro a 17-40 and a 400mm f5.6 in there along with a 1.4 teleconverter. All that is in the main compartment. I've got a cable release, a bunch of flash cards and a bubble level in the inside pockets. I can fit my EX580 ...

I have a LowePro CompuTrekker and a LowePro Trekker. I love these packs. I travel by air a lot and I can carry just about everything I need. I did buy a Think Tank roller bag that I really like because it holds everything and it fits in the overhead bins on airplanes but it really is a pain in the f...

My wife and I were commenting on the moon as we drove home from shopping tonight. It rained a lot today in Minnesota but the sky cleared and the moon was shining beautifully here. Our January thaw came a little late but with temperatures in the 40s, we couldn't be happier, especially since there are...

Carol, here are a couple of ideas for you. First, I learned a lot about Photoshop from Scott Kelby's Photoshop for Digital Photographers book. I think I've got them all; for CS, CS2 and CS3. Another thing to consider is Epson's Print Academy. They originally had a download program but now they've go...

Carol, one of the beauties of Photoshop is that you can accomplish something using any of a variety of different methods. Yours worked just fine. Using adjustment layers is not difficult and once you see how much easier they make things, you will never stop using them. I went to a weekend Photo work...

I would be interested in attending. I am usually able to arrange a business trip to New England at that time of the year. I can't commit for certain as October is a long way away, but I'll put it on my calendar and if everything falls into place I'll come. My wife hates flying, especially if we have...

Carol, if you want to keep the nice blue sky, open the file in photoshop, apply a hue/saturation adjustment layer and desaturate the blues to -60. With this adjustment layer you will get a layer mask. Use a big brush, set your foreground color to black and paint over the blue sky. Black will hide th...

Carol, first things first. I absolutely love the photo of the little kid. Perfectly exposed, the rosy cheeks, the beautiful blue eyes. That one belongs on a wall. Exquisite! Moving on to your other photos; I think the white balance on most of them is good. I think Auto white balance does pretty well...

Carol, you should know that I was a high school teacher for a couple of years after I got out of college. I still have a desire to teach, so let me offer an educational thought about your snow fence shot. This isn't a critique, just a photography lesson. You may already know this stuff but that's ok...

Carol, your photos are wonderful. I particularly liked the first swan. The stream photos were really nice too, especially the first one. There may be a couple of lessons here to get you out of the P mode. The swan might be a touch underexposed. On automatic, your camera thinks it is 18% gray. A rule...
