Re: Irene - big damage expected

Tony: Thanks for helping get the word out. I follow Joe on WeatherBell and he has been dead-on with Irene since she formed. It did seem to me that the models were slow to pick up on shortwave impulses coming SE out of west Canada and that these helped edge the Bermuda high to the east a bit, thus re...

Re: Predictions of "How Good"?

CTYankee: We in Texas are clinging to a prediction that the entire pattern over Texas will change around Sept. 1, ushering in cooler air and hopefully rain. Yesterday, the usually reliable temperature on my car thermometer registered 111 on an afternoon trip. This evening, I walked across the pastur...

Re: Predictions of "How Good"?

OK, it looks like there will be an east coast hurricane, Irene, which will probably hit South Carolina, go inland and then curve NE. I would this system, after it's downgraded to a tropical depression, will dump tons of rain on New England.

Should this impact this year's foliage for better or worse?

Re: Predictions of "How Good"?

So I guess the best we can say is, "So far, so good", eh? Meanwhile, here in the Dallas area, looks like today's high will be around 104. Tomorrow's high will be in the 105-110 range. All of the grassy medians are yellow-brown, the grass embankments along the freeways are totally dead. Trees are beg...

Re: NORTHERN VERMONT AND NORTH EAST VERMONT FOR FOLIAGE

Several times, I've operated with St. Johnsbury as my base for foliage trips. You might inquire of the Fairbanks Inn there...there may not be any vacancies during the foliage season. The town has a couple of reliable eating places.

Predictions of "How Good"?

Well, I'm sitting here in Texas, suffering from summer cabin fever. The temperature has been 105+ for 15 straight days. Has not rained since June. Sooooo, I'm thinking about my Vermont trip. And so the critical question looms: have the conditions so far this summer in Vermont been conducive to a gre...

Looking forward to another foliage trip in October. After 8 or so of these trips (we live in TX), for the first time, my wife and I will have company. Her older sister has been dying to see what we've been talking about so we will let her hang with us on this trip. Hope the weather and the leaves co...

Let me also suggest Hartford at an alternative to Boston. The airport is quite north of the city (and thereby closer to VT) and is adjacent to the interstate that heads up to VT.

We, too, will be using White River as our home base!

Four weeks ago, my wife and I were amidst the leaves near Fair Haven. Even though the foliage wasn't the best this year, I look back fondly on the trip...and have silently vowed to return every autumn until the funds run out in my savings account. Not only are the leaves and vistas fantastic, just t...

To our scientific folks...

What is the science reason for the lack of red in this season's foliage? Was it all related to the tropical storm that went up the east coast or were there other factors?

Absolutely stunning, Carol. My wife and I have returned to Texas and are already in withdrawal mode. Don't know if your shots made it worse or better!
