Dean, see my message above to Charles regarding the night photo shoots.

Re: The Great Fall Get Together
Charles, I'm planning to do a night photo shoot every night where the skies are clear. Friday and Saturday Andy and I will be staying with Carol in Barton. If the weather is good we will be shooting the night sky there. Wednesday and Thursday we will be in Waitsfield and we will shoot the night sky ...

Re: The Great Fall Get Together
Janice, on October 4, the galactic center of the Milky Way is visible from 8:02 PM until 9:40 PM and the moon doesn't rise until 11:50 PM. All of that means we have more than an hour and a half to photograph the night sky in darkness. I would like to be at our shoot location no later than 7:30 and i...

Re: The Great Fall Get Together
Janice, I am booked at the Summit Lodge in Killington. It had pretty good reviews on Trip Advisor and was reasonably priced.
I plan to do a night shoot on Sunday night, weather permitting.
Looking forward to meeting you in person.

Congrats Charles.
I went to the Vermont Life website but they still have their summer edition there. How about posting the photos they published here so we can see them now rather than wait for them to post their autumn addition? I and, I'm sure the others here would love to see them.

Re: In lieu of new Vermont photos...
Dean, I'm a bit of a Civil War buff myself. (I have an undergraduate degree in history.) I've read a bunch of Civil War books including Shelby Foote's Civil War . I have to admit though that I haven't gotten through the entire trilogy yet. My most recent Civil War read was Grant's memoirs. I found t...

"Even" Dean, it's good to see you back on the forum! You've made some nice photos. I especially like the shot with the cannon balls and cannon. The lighting is perfect and the bokeh is nice. A couple of comments about your photos: You've either cut off what I'll call the tails of the cannon or left ...

Re: Technology Marches On
Whatever camera a person buys, it is imperative that they understand the ramifications of the technology. For example, I see people shooting with their P&S cameras using the 10x zoom feature and hand holding it. I don't know what focal length is comparable to a 10x but I'm certain that a 10x can't b...

Re: The Great Fall Get Together
I will leave Minneapolis mid-morning on September 29. I fly into Hartford and hope to arrive at my inn in Waitsfield by early evening. I will stay there from Tuesday to Friday. I will spend the weekend in Barton with Carol and plan to stay in Killington on the night of October 4. My flight for home ...

Re: The Great Fall Get Together
Al- can you describe optimal locations for the Milky Way photo shoot? Obviously we want to be far away from "city light" but are there other things that we should consider? Ponds? Mountains? Would shooting from the top of one of the gap roads be a good idea? There are some important considerations....

The Great Fall Get Together
While autumn begins in two and a half months, it is time to start thinking about the 2015 Vermont foliage get together. For those who don’t know, we had a meet-up of SOV forum friends in 2010 and decided then that we should try to get together every five years. That time has arrived. I would love to...

Re: Questions about Owls Head and Kettle Pond
The hike isn't difficult but it is uphill so be aware of that. The view of Kettle Pond is due south so this can be a good morning or evening shot. The problem here is that there is a gate at the entrance and it opens late and closes early. I went there for an early morning shot and found the gate cl...

Re: Google Street View?
I use Google Earth all the time. For example, when I went to Yellowstone, I wanted to know what the best time was to shoot the lower Yellowstone Falls. I used Google Earth to get my bearings. I'd use it for Vermont too. If you wanted to photograph Job's Pond, for example, enter Job's Pond Vermont in...
