Re: Woodstock Area Oct 1 & 2 2016

CT/BM If I had known you were headed out Old King's "Highway" to Joe Ranger I would have told you some stories last night. Old King's was surveyed in 1763 by agents of King George, the very King George excoriated in the Declaration of Independence--hence, presumably, the name of the road. Old King's...

Re: Woodstock/Pomfret/Quechee

ct/bm great to see you guys. if you are looking for lunch today try the creamery, in town. it may be overwhelmed, however, if it is raining--the tourist buses dump people out at the green and they end up standing in line to eat. if the line there is too long the next best option is the woodstock far...

Nichols Ledge

Can someone address the question of when--within a range of 4 or 5 days-- Nichols Ledge is typically in best form?

Re: Foliage Update

The pond is surrounded on the east and south by steep hills that delay the time the light hits the pond and those hills. Once it does appear, the view from the parking area across the water and into the hills is into the sun. You can walk two or three hundred yards through the bramble to the left of...

Beaver Pond October 2015.jpg Beaver Pond, last year. Sorry, I have completely forgot how to post a photo here that preserves the clarity of the image. This was taken Oct 8 last year. My experience is that Beaver Pond is usually peak until around Oct 5 to Oct 9 or so. Cold weather might make put it ...

Re: Woodstock/Pomfret/Quechee

Depending on conditions, I plan to be in the Whites, around Stark, NH, or in the NEK, on the 1st and 2nd. I generally get back to Woodstock by 6 every day. I would be happy to join you guys for dinner on either day. Unfortunately my wife will not arrive until later in the month, when the color comes...

Odds are, our paths will cross in the NEK. I will be checking in.

Your plan is too much! I am worn out just reading about it.

Re: Hiking in Marsh-Billings-Rockefellar National Park?

CTYankee I am a MN resident. Years ago we drove around VT and NH in the fall after visiting one of our children at college. I was hooked. Since then we have spent every fall--from green leaves to sticks--in VT, all of them until last year at the same house in Woodstock with the woods of Mt Peg comin...

Re: Hiking in Marsh-Billings-Rockefellar National Park?

Along the Ottaquechee in 2015.jpg Here is a view along the Ottaquechee, from Old River Road, from 2015. There are many good spots to set up for a photo along here. I took this on Oct. 23, which is unusually late for so many leaves to remain. I took photos from this same spot from Sept. 25 on. There...

Re: Hiking in Marsh-Billings-Rockefellar National Park?

The view of Woodstock from the top of Mt Tom is like a postcard, but the hikes, esp on weekends, do not feel like pristine nature hikes because these trails are quite popular. The trails that are rated "easy" are very easy. You might also consider going up Mt. Peg, which for fourteen years was right...

Re: Fall New England Trip

Yes, 112 west of lincoln, then up to 116 to franconia. I have seen moose in the ammonoosuc river dry beds and on 112 itself in that area, one time strolling down 112 about fifty yards ahead of my car (i stopped and hoped that he would not turn around and charge my car, he gave me a look and walked o...

Re: Fall New England Trip

I have spent a month in the fall in Vt (and NH) for fifteen years. I usually arrive around Sept 25, and I usually head to the Whites (Kancamagus Hwy, Bear Notch, and trails off each) a few days after that because that is usually where the first color is. Of course, every year is different (summer mo...

Re: Woodstock/Pomfret/Quechee

Line Pond might be more appropriately called Line Puddle. It is tiny. Start on the Pomfret Road, going north out of Woodstock. About 50 yards south of the Pomfret town house, on the left, is Stage Road. Take Stage Road all the way into Barnard. The road will fork at a place where there is a very lon...

Color is all gone here now, but it was a good season, I think. Jenne Farm standard, from Gold Coast Road, and at Line Pond:
