On photographing the Sugar Shack

Although Kaplan calls it a morning shot, I have found the most dramatic shots around 4pm, that's late afternoon in the fall. At that time, shadows are cast across the road from the left, and the broad side of the building facing the photographer up the hill, is lit. The red polarizes and pops nicely...

A word of warning on Owl's Head

A buddy and I decided to shoot from Owl's Head at dawn, and arrived to find the gate was LOCKED. It's a good trek up the road to the parking, then the quarter mile climb from there. Suffice to say, we had a serious change of plans. We headed back north to Peacham Pond, and were greeted by the sound ...

The Old Farmer's Almanac CLAIMS an 80 percent track record, but I remember an analysis several years back ACTUALLY showed less that 35 percent of the predictions actually panned out. According to a Wunderground blog, "Nick Bond a Seattle based research meteorologist did a little analysis: He assembl...

Acrobat problems with the Photographing Vermont PDF

Andy, For some reason I get warnings about some kind of incompatibility of your PDF with Acrobat on a Vista laptop and also on an old Millenium edition desktop, and both shut it down. I have no idea why. I get about as far as the Peacham section, then a warning appears, and I lose it. Too bad. I kno...

Peacham picture on Yankee Magazine's website

I was thrilled to have a photo I submitted to Yankee Magazine's foliage website chosen as their fall photo for 2007. http://www.yankeefoliage.com/fcontest/fallphoto For those who've been interested in what the Peacham scene looks like, this is an example of the beautiful morning light. It was actual...

The distinct advantage of digital cropping

Andy, I used to be dedicated to slide film, and never though I'd go digital. But since adding two digital SLRs with a 1.5x factor on my lenses, my film cameras are getting lonely. I've always been an "optical extraction" kinda guy, enjoying the power of telephoto images. Now my 70-300mm APO lens bec...

Re: Approach to falls

Since my wife is expecting, I don't want to hike to a fall. Are there any falls where you could drive to, park and have a good time? Appreciate the help. A short walk is fine but I want to avoid any serious walking. Regards, Azeez It's not in Vermont, but not far away from Wells River off Route I-9...

Interesting Farm - in what town?

In what town is the farm, and does "interesting" translate into a good photo opportunity? Also, is it a morning or afternoon shot? We appreciate your extensive knowledge of Vermont, and thank you for your timely advice.

Fall Photo Tips

As Andy pointed out correctly, your best bet on photographing moving water for that silky effect, is to use a long exposure at your lowest ISO. But while Andy suggested setting the camera on shutter priority, I've had great success setting it to aperture priority at my smallest aperture (f16 or 22) ...

Cloudland AKA Ridge Road photo ops

On the link you provided, there are several Cloudland Road (also known as Ridge Road) scenes. The Lee Farm, Sleepy Hollow - formerly the Gray Farm, and Pomfret Highland Farm (erroneously ID'd in one caption as Elm Grove Farm). All are mid to late morning shots....generally photogs go there after the...

Yes, too early for Southern Vermont but not Northern Vermont

Unless you're heading to very high elevations (top of Mount Snow for instance) you won't find much bright color. Occasional trees could show oranges or reds, but the overall scene won't. See other posts about the Northeast Kingdom where the colors are starting to really show. This weekend might be p...

Different shot of Peacham from the other hill

Andy asked if I would also post this info from the Foliage forum here as well. It's a shot that pro photog Alan Graham got on the cover of Vermont Life a few years back. One photographic spot not mentioned for the town of Peacham is actually in East Peacham. It's a shot for first light in the mornin...

Peacham photo spots

One photographic spot not mentioned for the town of Peacham is actually in East Peacham. It's a shot for first light in the morning. From the Peacham store (which got a great write-up in the latest issue of Vermont magazine) head down the hill until you reach a crossroads at the bottom, then head st...

Re: Woodstock Area on October 15th

I was in Woodstock and Quechee on Saturday, and it looks like the color was not peak yet. Moderate color in the gorge, and early color at the Jenne Farm south of Woodstock. This coming weekend should be fine for leaf peeping and photography as well. Surprisingly, areas to the North like Peacham and ...
