Tinmouth, Middletown Springs & Danby

I just came back from the area Saturday evening. Some nice color in Tinmouth, a little less vibrant in Middletown Springs (less color behind the Community Church steeple from the hill), and somewhat disappointing color on the hills around Danby Four Corners. Some individual trees showed stunning col...

Steak or Hamburg?

Don't mean to sound a dissonant note. But with the superb color we have seen here in New England, why would you want to settle for less in the mid Atlantic states? The prime steak of Vermont and New Hampshire versus the Big Mac of the Smokies doesn't seem like a real comparison. With the color...

A great place to photograph in Vermont

Interesting that Mr Kaplan's photo is a later day shot, with the sun raking the side of the sugar house facing the road, even though he suggests it as a morning shot after the Jenne Farm. Regardless, it's become an iconic image of what lures all photographers to the Green Mountain State. And many of...

Here's a childhood memory from the Green Mountain State

When I was a youngster, the family would travel up through Vermont, and there were big signs for SEA SHELL CITY on Route 7 near Brandon. "50 miles ahead" the sign would proclaim the pleasures of the unlikeliest of Green Mountain attractions. After many signs, there would appear some dubious roadside...

Point well taken, leaflover

And with the beautiful steeples of churches rising above the fall colors, it's even more inspiring. Or is that "in-SPIRE-ing?" As an example, the white steeples in Peacham and Middletown Springs, and the brown steeple in East Orange, add a beautiful counterpoint to the colors of autumn in Vermont. T...

Lady Slippers still looking good on Thursday June 25th

Thanks Phil for the inspirational pictures that prompted me to head to the bog with my camera equipment. All I can say is WOW....a great photo op in a place I'd never ever stumble on by myself. Using your directions backward.....I traveled from Hartland Four Corners and up Weed Road....I arrived at ...

Use the plus button.

Thanks guys for your comments. If you hit the plus (+) button on the bottom, you can enlarge the view. Click as many times as you can, then drag the image up to view the caption (as you would on a google map). Unfortunately, you lose the detail that can actually be seen in the printed book. I think ...

Thought I'd share my New England Fall Photo Book

I found out just how easy it is to publish your own photo book, and thought I'd try it out with fall photos from Vermont and around New England. You can page through to see some of my favorite places to photograph http://www.mypublisher.com/bookshelf/bookviewer.py?d=tq%3Ey-cppl%60je%3E36377%3A3 You ...

Ditto on pwt54's light observations

There is nothing like a backlit tree, practically glowing as sun reveals the brilliant color in the leaves. Driving against the light is excellent advice. :D And let me add that, even if there is no sun, wearing warm polarizing sunglasses (I use a pair of fisherman's glasses bought at a walmart stor...

Was just there on Wednesday 10-8

Jenne Farm, south of Woodstock, looked good at sunrise, with about THREE DOZEN PHOTOGRAPHERS lining the hillside to get shots. Sun cooperated, and the foliage polarized nicely. Remember, although you should be there before the sun comes up, it still needs to rise above the hill to cast its light on ...

Was just there Saturday and Sunday

Foliage is very good, but not great. I arrived at dawn Saturday to photograph the village from a hill in East Peacham, but the clouds blocked the dawning sun. Clouds didn't break for a good hour or so. After staying at Joe's Pond overnight, I went back for dawn Sunday morning, and was greeted by a v...

Ditto on Celfan's suggestion

Since I live just 15 miles away from Northampton, Mass, I can heartily recommend a visit across the Vermont border to one of the great small arts and restaurant cities in the country. I drive to Northampton to get on I-91 for the trip up to the glories of the Green Mountain State. Consider too a vis...

Route 100 south of route ____ should still have good color this coming weekend.

We're all kinda curious what that route might be.

Moss Glen Falls closed to visitors

I just got back from a 2 day trip to Vermont, and headed down route 100 to view Moss Glen Falls in Granville. Unfortunately, the parking is closed off with orange tape, and it looks like they're brought in a crane to hide the view. Anyone know what happened, or was this planned? If it was planned, t...

Great scene in Middletown Springs

If you drive up the hill up past the Community Church of Middletown Springs on the green, you can get an incredible view, isolating the white church steeple against a kaleidoscope of fall colors. It's one of the nicest Vermont scenes I've ever photographed.
