Re: So Mother Nature Has Thrown Us A Curve Ball...

Today I repeated the route I took a week ago, from Woodstock up to Wells River, to Lincoln NH, out the Kanc, around Bear Notch through Crawford Notch and Franconia Notch, west into Vermont and then south through Vermont, generally within 10 miles of 91, back to Woodstock. There was not much change f...

Re: Foliage Report Friday Sept 22

yes, i was at the south end of willoughby, on the overlook. there is an element to this endeavor that is like fishing--you have to be in the right place at the right time. From the NEK regularly catches really big fish. so i am going to follow his plan and take another look on tuesday or wednesday. ...

Re: So Mother Nature Has Thrown Us A Curve Ball...

I made a long loop today, from Woodstock, to St Johnsbury, to Lake Willoughby, to Island Pond, to Norton, to Canaan, down to Colebrook NH, to Franconia, to Beaver Pond on 112, and back down, with many detours along the way to check out a number of my customary autumn "shrines." It was 70 degrees or ...

Re: Woodstock Area Oct 1 & 2 2016

Conditions have held up remarkably well in Woodstock/Pomfret/Bridgewater. In fact, upper Cloudland Road and Galaxy Hill were at peak today, and look like they will hold on for a bit. The colors were as good as I have seen on these roads since 2001. Leffert's Pond Chittenden area was very good today,...

Re: Townshend, Belmont, Grafton, Newfane, etc

I was on the road to somerset up from 9, and it was stripped, so I decided that the Kelly Stand Road was probably not going to be worth the time since it usually goes pretty early. If you hear that it is still any good let me know, I might go back down there in that case.

Re: Townshend, Belmont, Grafton, Newfane, etc

looked like milfoil to me.

i did ride the length of 9 today. a lot of leaf drop after yesterday's weather, esp in the higher elevations.

but 7 and 7A from bennington up to rutland were good, relatively little leaf drop and a fair amount of red.

Townshend, Belmont, Grafton, Newfane, etc

I headed south from my Woodstock headquarters this morning. Jenne Farm is about at peak. Leaves are fragile here, the rain today I am sure took its toll. The Andover East Hill area is good, a bit past peak. Some red still hanging on, but not a lot. Townshend: the Scott covered bridge is being rebuil...

markm also try webster hill road, off pomfret road. there is a good view to the south. it is in the general direction toward the maple grove farm. i was there early this morning. it was too cloudy and dark to get a sense for the color, but it usually comes in late there, so it should still be ok.

Re: Woodstock Area Oct 1 & 2 2016

A few observations for those who are still here: Woodstock/Pomfret is a mixed bag. Some areas are still ripening (upper Cloudland), some are nearly leafless (lower Cloudland and parts of River Road along the Ottaquechee). Joe Ranger and Galaxy Hill are good, but mostly orange. The last few years upp...

Re: Minnesotaman - are you back in Vermont for the rest of the month?

CT I have just returned. I will formulate plan tonight. I think I will probably be up in the Hinesburg area tomorrow. Depending on what I find I will probably head down in direction you mention. I got only one of the incredible blue sky days in the NEK last week. I covered a lot of territory that da...

CT, if you stay in the NEK tomorrow, try Wheeler Pond. I was there this morning. It was quite spectacular. A few trees have begun to drop leaves on the west side so I would get there in the next two days.

Re: Foliage Update

Joe's Pond is not worth your time. A completely different kettle of fish. 105 from Island Pond to the NH border is what I was referring to. 105 is a Vermont state highway. From what I saw in the last two days, the northeastern quadrant of VT will be spectacular for the next five or six days, some of...

Re: Foliage Update

I was at Willoughby yesterday, both ends, and in surrounding areas. The areas off the lake are much better than the lake itself, which is still mostly yellows and greens, quite a few days to go, I thought. Try Job's Pond. It was foggy when I was there, but it looked like reds, yellows and oranges ac...
