To my dismay, I learned that many wildlife photos really aren't "wildlife". The great photos you see published are taken at wildlife ranches where these captive animals are made available to photographers who have had all kinds of time to prepare their cameras. There are no surprises. Triple D in Mo...

I drove from Concord, NH to Burlington today. My route took me through Woodstock on Route 4 to Killington, up 100 to Waterbury and on to Burlington. Unfortunately, early this morning was drizzly with low hanging clouds so I didn't see a lot of color. I posted a photo of the Quechee Gorge taken from ...

I just bought a 40D after shooting with a 10D for several years. Both are excellent cameras. I'm not sure what you mean by the lens ratio but if you mean the 1.6 crop factor, it means that a 100 mm lens will still be a 100 mm lens but 60% will be cropped giving you a lens that is effectively 160 mm....

Thanks for your reply pwt. I visited Dead Creek last year and didn't see a goose. Drove down the road you mentioned and still didn't see a thing. As I drove back to the highway, a flock of thousands of geese came it. One of the most amazing things I've ever seen. I found pretty good color in the Cha...

Cornwall Swamp - Gifford Woods Natural Area

I'll be visiting Vermont from Oct 10 - 12 this year and I'm looking for a shot of colorful trees in a marshy area with enough water to capture reflections. I'll be leaving Burlington early on the 11th with the ultimate destination of Manchester, NH to catch a plane late on the 12th. My DeLorme's atl...

Smugglers Notch

I've posted two photos in the Contributors Section that I took today near Smuggler's Notch. Access them from the Vermont Photography Forum. You will see that color is past peak in that area although it is still possible to get some good photos.

Re: Northeast Kingdom Drive And More!

I flew into Burlington late this afternoon. Drove north on I89 to 104 to Jeffersonville, 108 over Smugglers Notch to Stowe, 100 to I89 and back to Burlington. All of the mountain areas were well past peak with lots of bare trees. Smugglers Notch was very disappointing. I hope things are better farth...

Foliage Report: October 12

I left Littleton, NH early this morning and traveled to Burlington. I took Hwy 2 from St. Johnsbury to Plainfield, then Hwy 14 north to Hwy 15 and on to Jeffersonville. From there I drove over Smugglers Notch to Stowe. Color was almost non-existent from St Johnsbury to Johnson. About 80% of the tree...

Re: Foilage Report : October 9

I will be heading back to Burlington on Wednesday. Haven't decided the route, but I talked to someone today who said the best colors they've seen were in Stowe. I'll probably head that way and then down 100 past Waitsfield and Warren and drive over the Lincoln Gap. I'd appreciate any other ideas.

Re: Foilage Report : October 9

While a lot of trees were bare, I didn't mean to suggest that there were no leaves. The colors really seemed dull and there was a noticable lack of red. I saw lots of yellows and yellow-orange but few reds. The mountains almost looked uniformly yellow-orange. To me they appeared to be what I expect ...

Foilage Report : October 9

I arrived in Burlington yesterday to begin my 4 day photo excursion. I set out early this morning. My route took me on I89 to Barre where I picked up 302 to 232. I turned right on Hwy 2 to St Johnsbury, took I91 to Lyndonville and 5a to West Burke. I drove the Newark Road, stopping at Job's Pond and...

Re: Peak-Seeking Leaf Peepers - Get Thee to Route 9!

Thank you for your wonderful photo and your suggestion that we try Route 9. For those of us who are unfamiliar, can you give us an idea where Route 9 is? I've been scouring my Vermont map but can't find it. Thanks.

Re: Weekend weather Northeast

The high temperature in Minneapolis yesterday was 80 degrees. We had heavy rains of from 5 to 10 inches last evening and an overnight low temperature of 70 degrees. At 5:00 tongiht it was 56 degrees and we are dropping fast with a chance of snow flurries overnight. I mention this because this weathe...

Two questions: What lake is it? Is the photo from high above the lake taken from the road or is it from a hiking trail?

Thanks.

Re: Stowe area waterfalls

I visited Bingham Falls last year. It is not marked on the highway. There is a rather large pullout but no signs. One thing to consider...this falls is not in a deciduous forest so you won't be able to shoot this waterfall with any autumn color in it. I will be in Vermont beginning next Saturday for...
