Abby (Carol) - thanks for the feedback. Maybe it was the polarizing filter and, I'm guessing, the sun was behind you early on a not-too-bright day. I've been trying to take a similar images, but into the sun late in the day. Guess I'll just have to try a different time of day for that photo. Andy - ...

Abby - what setting did you use for the Shadow Lake photo? I'm guessing you use a digital camera and wonder how you got the colors on the hillside to show up well between the reflected light off the water and the backlight from the sky. I'm using digital for foliage for the first time and haven't qu...

Check this forum just before your trip. If most of VT is past peak, try Mass. , especially western Mass and the Berkshires. The foliage often lasts longer there and the oaks and maples can be very red along Route 2. In Vt. the area northwest of Middlebury and into the Champlain Valley sometimes has ...

35 from Grafton to Chester Right (east) on Route 11, then left (north) on 103 Turn right (east) at Route 131, to Route 106, turn left (north), then to Woodstock. That's a very pretty route on good backroads. Then left (west) on route 4 to 100, and up route 100 if you have time, or right on 4 through...

The color is improving fairly quickly at elevations above 2000' in southern VT and a trip to Wilmington may be worthwhile this weekend (9/27-28) even if not at peak. I was surprised at the increase in color in the Stratton/Jamaica region of Route 30 between Saturday and Sunday last weekend.

Vermont has a lot of scenic hiking trails and one of the best ways to experience foliage season is on foot. "Vermont's Long Trail" map from The Wilderness Map Company and the Green Mountain Clubs "Day Hiker's Guide To Vermont" are excellent resources if you want to explore some trails. You can find ...

Re: bm & pwt54 - I have to decide today

I agree w/ pwt54 after seeing his post. Go the higher route on the way in (9/100) and the lower route on the way out. Foliage is likely to last longer going back via Rupert, etc.

Re: bm & pwt54 - I have to decide today

Option 1 has more scenic spots, colorful foliage and less development. There's a lot of sugar maple as you go over the Taconics from West Rupert to Route 30 (in fact you can cut off on Rupert-Pawlet Rd. as you ascend the hill just after W.Rupert and go through miles of maple.) Route 7/9 across to Be...

Re: Foliage color in southern Vermont

I was in Manchester this morning and about ten miles from there right now. It's getting very close to peak and I'd recommend coming sooner rather than later. There's still a lot of green showing this afternoon, but the colors seem to be turning quickly and there was widespread frost last night. It w...

Re: Sunrise photography spots near Montpelier?

Elevations in southwest Vermont range from 3800' down to about 800', and you can change elevation quickly, which means the foliage can be past peak at the top of Kelly Stand Road and just approaching peak at the bottom. Right now, there's still lots of green foliage near the bottom of Kelly Stand - ...

Re: Lake Bomoseen Oct. 9 to Oct. 13

I second PWT54's advice to travel north via Brattleboro/Routes 9-100-30, which is higher, then return via Route 7, Bennington and western Mass., which is lower. The foliage is approaching peak in Bennington County (I'm presently near the bottom of Kelly Stand Rd. in Sunderland at about 1000' elevati...

This is an unusual, very scenic route that goes through small villages and undeveloped areas. 87 north to Route 29 at Saratoga Springs (exit 15, follow signs to 29 East). East (right) on 29 to Route 22 north. North (left) on 22 to Salem, NY. East on 153 at Salem to E.Rupert, VT. North(left) on Route...

Re: Where's the snow?

We had about 6" in Manchester, but it was gone in 24 hours. It was wet & heavy, so it knocked down some of the weaker trees and branches.

The long range forecast is for a cold, snowy winter.
