Maybe try the Champlain Valley (around Burlington) - I've noticed there's still a bit of green around locally with some trees changing.
Hopefully the wind and rain over the next few days doesn't take down the leaves prematurely!
Good luck with your trip!

Re: Are we to late?
I live in Burlington and have seen some nice colors headed just a bit south, mostly on Route 116 and out towards Camel's Hump area.
Hope you enjoy your visit!

10/9 Update - Route 100, Bristol, Lincoln Gap
I took a drive today down Route 100 from Waterbury to Moss Glen Falls (Granville). There were some areas with nice color, but not much to speak of that could be considered dramatic. I circled back and went through the Lincoln Gap, an area that seemed a bit past peak. However, the drive towards Burli...

Re: Photographing Foliage Abstracts
Wow, thanks for your very kind words! I am hoping to be roaming around Vermont for much of tomorrow looking for things to photograph. I can post what I find. As far as the Stowe area, I'm not sure - my favorite thing to do is carry my Delorme Atlas along with me and just get "lost" on back roads, lo...

One of the most talented abstract macro photographers I know is Mike Brown - you can see some of his work here:

He also has an article on his approach here:

Re: Dont go to ... areas in South-central- west Vermont
Wow, that is really too bad! I was going to check out Route 100 and 125 - was it not turning yet or past peak? Colors were really good two days ago around Camel's Hump and Bristol area. Just starting to change around Addison.

Re: Photographing Foliage Abstracts
Thank you for your replies! Loons are one of my favorite creatures, and photographing them was amazing. Just to hear their calls astounds me. I was lucky to be able to work with the Loon Preservation Committee (www.loon.org) to photograph some of the birds in NH this summer. I should update my page ...

Photographing Foliage Abstracts
Someone asked me yesterday if I got bored with photographing fall foliage. My answer is definitely no! Besides the fact that I love photography enough to be making it my career, fall colors are different every year, and I am different every year - I see new opportunities every time I am behind the c...

10/6 Update - Chittenden and Addison
I finally got some time to drive around yesterday. The colors were splendid in the sunlight around the mountains, especially on my visit to Camel's Hump. For those visiting Vermont who are also interested in birds, Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area in Addision (right outside of Vergennes) is a goo...

Re: A good head
Personally, I like the Wimberley Sidekick - it is great for panning with action. I now use the full Wimberley Head, but that would be overkill for midrange telephotos. Otherwise, I simply shoot off of a ballhead, but I don't like it. Really Right Stuff offers what is supposed to be a great ballhead,...

Re: jpeg sizes
Actually, resolution / dpi / ppi is only relevant when it comes to printing. This setting should not need to be changed for web. What is important is "image size" - especially in pixels. Reasonable web images run 400-600 pixels on the longest side. When you save a JPEG, you can alter the quality lev...

Re: Foliage and water
I find the best part of photographing fall colors is just driving around, exploring new parts of the state that I never knew about. That's how I happen upon some of the scenes to photograph. For capturing moving water, you can try slower shutter speeds to create a pleasant "blur" effect. You might h...

"Leaf Peepers" Half Marathon, Waterbury
I ran the Leaf Peepers Half Marathon on Sunday and it was a beautiful course. Lots of mountains with fall colors, shrouded with mist. For runners who visit the area in the fall, I can recommend this annual race - it was a lot of fun and quite scenic. The website with details is http://www.cvrunners....
